“Political partnerships are critical for populations with growth potential in the 21st century and are necessary in order to advance resolution of critical problems facing the African American community Its economic power provides a new tool to use in leveraging their solidarity” (See pp. 46-47).
Children brought up in African American communities are more prone to facing self-esteem and racial identity related challenges. The reason is that they often experience hostile life occurrences as they grow up. They experience discrimination mostly due to the different skin and eye color, as well as the different hair texture. Discrimination incidences may lead to psychological stresses, which affect cognitive, behavioral and emotional development of the African American children. One aspect of these communities that may serve as a strength is the recognition of education as a powerful empowerment tool.
In his book, Letha See mentions the possibility of these communities having growth potential. Inner cities, according to research, have several economic advantages meaning that they can utilize them to overcome the challenges that the African American children and families face. The location of inner cities is economically valuable and offers companies a competitive edge. When companies put up businesses in such areas, the residents benefit in terms of job opportunities, retail, financial and personal services. The jobs may not be well paying due to the low levels of skills, but they do provide funds for basic needs such as education for their children. These communities have a passion for work, and this attribute provides an advantage for their development.
Concentration of political power on minor issues in these communities causes an overlook on the actual problems that need critical attention. Leaders need to know the potential strategic areas of wealth accumulation and formulate strategies to develop them. In order to resolve the acute problems in the African American communities, leadership should focus on objectives meant to address racial profiling, renovation of the basic facilities such as health centers, schools, and road infrastructure. Focusing on these aspects will be a step towards overcoming the existing challenges.
