I would like to begin with giving a brief overview of the background of the conflict. I am a part of a meeting where Joe and Mary enter into a conflict over a trial issues in meeting. Based on what have read in the Chapter 9, I would like to take the opportunity to resolve the issue.
In response to this outburst, I would like to take Joe away to a different meeting room to have a frank conversation with him. I will start the conversation with the intention of making him relaxed and comfortable, so that he is able to open up to discussing his problem. During the course of the conversation, I would like to determine whether the source of conflict is personal differences, information deficiency, role incompatibility, or just environmental stress.
In his context, I will make him aware of the individual stress coping strategies. Among the most important things, I will stress upon the need to do regular exercise. I will harp on the point that it helps people in coping with stress better than other options. Besides that it also helps them feel relaxed, enhance their self-esteem, and more importantly get their mind off the work for a while. Along with this, I will suggest making use of means of relaxation such as listening to music or yoga. Any kind of meditation will also help in this context. Further, I would recommend to him paying attention to the consequences of his own behaviour. Also, I will inform him about various cognitive therapies techniques being employed by clinical psychologists. Lastly, networking with peers, and in his case with Mary will help develop better understand, which will be useful in formal work environment.
Lastly, I would also like to inform him about the physical and psychological problems due to stress and resulting conflict. Physical health problems, which are linked to stress include – immune system problem and cardiovascular problem – to name a few. Similarly, psychological problems will include; anger, anxiety, depression, nervousness, and tension.
