The representation of Black race in music video “U.N.I.T.Y.” by Queen Latifah
The music video “U.N.I.T.Y.” by Queen Latifah from 1993, which I have chosen for the demonstration of Black identity, illustrates how Black women describe their position in relationships with Black men and the whole society.
The song lyrics is provocative with using the filthy language, which perfectly reflects the common attitude of Black race; it demonstrates that people are free from the society frameworks. Queen Latifah represents herself as a strong independent woman. She raps about losing respect for women within Black community; that point is significant because Black Americans have brought rap style to American music culture. Her voice is full of confidence and claim. She demands unity for her sisters with the filling of awareness. Her vision of the problem is the complicated conditions for a cultivation of the higher social status for Black people.
The atmosphere in the video reflects the vision of the unity of Black community. Queen Latifah speaks on behalf of people behind her back. The scene of action is the working district for Black people, with ruinous buildings and bright graffiti, where they live at a disadvantage, however with freedom from social pressure. Regardless of how society perceives them, they attempt to solve their own problems and fight for the equal rights.
According to the five stereotypes of African-American history in early film, I consider that Queen Latifah can be described as Mammy since she rises the problem issues within the generation of Black women. Queen Latifah is as stubborn and purposeful as Mommy was; she warns women from her community about implicit treats and understands them. The music video mentions the significant trait of the gender identity in Black society. Women are able to advance the rights of their community. The fearlessness and assertiveness represent them as an equal part of the race. They have an ability and willingness to liberate themselves from the racial prejudices.
