It is commonly known fact that human beings are basically social animals and are not able to live for their own. However, the main difference between animal and people is that humans have souls and mind which let them live in peace, cooperate and help each other. One of forms of this support is volunteering.
What is volunteering? Who is a voluntary servant or volunteer? Contrary to popular belief, it is a person who helps other of his or her own free will, voluntarily and does not expect any remuneration except emotional reward and satisfied sense of duty and responsibility. Volunteering is a process in which those people are involved.
As a matter of fact, we can divide volunteering into several categories or spheres. First one is searching and attraction of funds and resources for some particular purposes, in other words, financial support. This one is well-spread in Ukraine. Second direction is taking active part in social live: visiting third-world countries, shelters, orphanages, hospitals etc and communicating with people there. Third sphere is working for free as a nurse, a teacher, a social worker or even as a shop assistant.
As to me, volunteering is essential nowadays as there are so many people left to themselves without any means of existence, who need not only financial and material, but emotional support. Even simple conversation or small talk can bring a person back to live and give hope again. For this reason, I am trying to do my best in this direction and that is why I am taking part in a voluntary organization that is engaged in both attraction of funds and work on a pay-free basis. By this time I have visited an orphanage and a hospital with an entertaining program, toys and clothes. There is nothing more thrilling and pleasant than happiness in children’s eyes and realization that you brought them this joy.
It is my considered opinion that volunteer work is based upon altruism as it is a cornerstone for people’s interaction. There is no place for selfishness and egoism, because these qualities oppose to the whole idea of disinterested work.
