Individuals lay the basis of a society where they accept other people and live with them. Social organizations and behaviors are molded according to society and people who shape society. A subculture can be termed as the meaning of styles outlined by youth as a symbolic form of resistance. People form society after getting influenced one of seven models and subcultures happen within society as a form of resistance. The formation of subcultures does not overcome potential benefits of society, but subculture opposes to the basic ideology and social normalization. Subcultures add to the variations of any society such as teddy boys, skinheads, mod, rockers, and punks are few of many subcultures as the prominent part of any society. The sub-culture considered for this paper is hacker culture. The reason for selecting this culture is that its members deviate from the normal values, and they share their experiences and values to develop working habits that may not be acceptable to society at large.
The hacker culture group’s identity is based on the creative nature of their work. The hacker culture could be considered as a collection of subcultures formed by different groups that have a common interest in computers and programming.
The hacker culture could be traced back to last 50 years. With the invention of computers and programming individuals with expertise became part of this culture. The dominant identity of this group is that they differentiate themselves from crackers who term themselves as hackers destined to exploit weaknesses in a computer society. The history of hackers dates back to seventeenth century derived from the word “lusty laborer”. However, the idea of hacking is an old concept even before the programmers used the term hackers for themselves. During 1960, the group hackers emerged as proficient computer programmers. Adverse implications of the group are because of the literal definition of hackers engaged in launching attacks or stealing data from official sites. The main agenda of the subculture was to enjoy the intellectual change of creatively negating the limitations of programming systems. The hackers challenged their capabilities by engaging themselves in manipulating the programs. The fundamental characteristic of the group includes the innovative creation of software and sharing it among the computer society. The theorist Emilie Durkheim and many other theorists have explained the concept of behavior are shaping up the society and how individual or group affect the society by their behavior. The subculture “hackers” is a cluster of geniuses trying to improve the computer society by providing solutions of technology. The larger society has so far accepted the group because of the services and help provided by them. Initially, the crackers who have some common characteristics as that of hackers posed a threat to the relationship with the larger society. Professional hackers have been active and provide services keeping ethical behavior intact. Though few of hacker groups were notorious for launching attacks on many sites, but ethical hackers group denied to accept such atrocious hackers as part of them and brandished them as crackers. Hackers have strengthened their relationship with larger society by enabling the services such as recovery of the password and some other software. The integral question that comes in minds how members join the group and are considered part of the group. The prominent groups such as anonymous and lizard squad have some rules and guidelines which one needs to follow while joining the group. If the members interested have the ability to come up with something innovative and creative are readily accepted. The new members remain the part of the group as long as they come up with useful hacks and software developing skills have to be effective as well. The members with the ability to crack the password and development of some tricky software are considered different from the rest of society who fails to do programming efficiently. The existence of the hackers group is linked to the cultural, social, and political history of computer which explains that brains are needed to become part of such large group who has rich history. Members who strive to become part of the culture are required to come up with an elegant solution to programming problems. There are various members of hacker culture such as computer security hackers, programmer subculture of hackers, and home computer hackers. The members stay part of the group as long as they want and can provide innovative solutions. They do not age out if they do not want to, but instead the affiliation continues into adulthood. The struggles to become part of an ethical and professional hacker group are real where wannabes tend to be part of an effective hacker group showcase their abilities. The wannabes go to every length to prove they are useful and keep on working hard to be accepted by the larger society. They are different from the other group members because they constantly strive to become a significant part of the hacker community. With the ability to encrypt and decrypt the data, I believe to become an efficient asset to the hacker community. The crucial significance of the hacker community engaged in providing efficient solutions to programming problems makes it necessary for me to be part of such community. Being able to recover the password or fix up hacked computer ability comes in handy if you know how to handle it. Besides society needs positive hackers around than those crackers who mess up the programs in the first place.
