Suburbs offer conducive places to retire after a long day’s work. However, diffusion of urban cultures or lifestyles into suburbs renders the areas unconducive. Partly, private cars are often opposed, in favor, for public transport due to varied reasons such as pollution in suburbs. The problems of private cars are more pronounced in low-density suburbs where private cars are blamed for most problems that arise or exist. People living in suburbs have embraced the car culture to the extent they are labeled as ‘slaves of cars.’ The continued proliferation of cars in low-density suburbs has made the areas inhospitable and denied the locations the traditional neighborhood qualities where people could interact as they walk. Further, low-density suburbs are attracting urbanization leading to a lack of interactions because dwellers are hurriedly rushing to places. In a similar manner, the proliferation of urbanization and car culture has led to the loss of generational links, loss of local ties, and ignorance of history. The key reasons these phenomenal issues are arising is because people focus on money. The consequences of focusing on money are the emergence of radical feminism generation, decreasing civil action, preference for pop cultures, and the dominance of TV as a source of leisure.
Most people believe suburbs are conducive places due to low traffic jams and a traditional way of living. However, some people condemn suburbs because some are old and inhabitable. The elderly want to avoid areas they aged up as they raised their children. The old accuse the suburbs of being isolated areas suggesting dwellers struggle to make a living. The areas also lack good schools implying local children cannot rise to join the best universities such as Harvard. Still, same areas of suburbs are insecure implying people are preoccupied with indoor activities such as TV. Further, people are conservative in maintaining a traditional lifestyle signifying why they oppose land use developments. Elsewhere, some suburbs are remotely located to the extent they have to organize and foresee some issues such as preparing for fire season and fixing damaged sections of the road.
The various problems existing in suburbs are multifaceted implying many stakeholders including the government, planners, locals and others should be blamed. Suburbs would be good places to live if the government had sound public policies. Specifically, the government should put up mass-transit systems, hike parking fee, and tax gasoline and, later on, use the proceeds to distribute services that are in urban centers to all suburbs. The government should also tax the car industry to penalize car use and lower taxes on trains to encourage consumption of public transport systems. Proper planning should also be done to bring train-terminus stations close to workplaces and in so doing discourage people from using public cars to travel back home. The suburbs will begin to attract the interest of the working class as well as investors because of efficient and cheap transport. In a similar manner, the car culture in suburbs will begin to fade because of a convenient transport system. The rate of pollution will also decline and increase productivity because trains are punctual and cheap to supply goods and services. In another sphere, the existence of a good public transport system will kill social stratification because everyone will be forced to use public transport and in so doing eliminate car ownership as an issue that defines the wealth of people in suburbs.
