Contrary to the perceptions of non city dwellers of the city dwellers blasé attitude, city dwellers are in fact extremely helpful and supportive of each other especially in times of calamities and disasters.
In the article Let’s not forget Superstorm Sandy’s victims Steph Goralnick, highlights the assistance activities of which he was a part of that the city dwellers have been involved with in the after math of the devastating hurricane.
Goralnick’s home in Brooklyn was never affected but he took some time off with friends and headed to lower Manhattan where together with other city dwellers, they embarked on assisting the affected citizens in all ways that they could. He asserts that the hurricane in way was a common bond between and among strangers with each person being concerned of the other person’s welfare. Goralnick teamed up with other volunteers from Bonaventure University to assist the victims with recovery and clean up. In one instance, he met a man who lived alone struggling to save the little he could from his house. Goralnick helped this man to put together the little that had not been destroyed (Goralnick, 2012).
Transit workers who were also affected in one way or another refused to put their interests first before others and worked tirelessly to ensure that the subway tunnels resumed their usual operations. Some are reported to have worked over 80 hours without going to their families struggling to clear off the subway system off the filth that had accumulated inside and also pumping the sea water that had flooded the subways.
On resuming back his duties and lacking time to assist directly on the ground, Goralnick stated an online campaign by uploading some of the photos he took online through instagram which received immediate response from individuals in the city asking how they could donate and how they could volunteer(Goralnick, 2012).
Considering the concerted efforts of the city dwellers coming up with all those groups for rescuing and recovery like the Rockaway Renegades and all by volunteering, it is evidently clear that majority of city dwellers do not have a blasé attitude but all concerned with the well being of other people.
