In case of a catastrophe such as the one under the case study, it is extremely vital to determine a criterion for selection of people. The leader should select people with desirable characteristics that he wishes the next generation or world to have. It is also vital to select people that will have a connection with the past world. The significance of this is that it will pass to the next world the values, beliefs and aspirations of the previous world. This is essential to ensure continuity of the human race and societal norms. Diversity with regard to ethnicity, race, ideas, religion and world view is extremely vital. Therefore, the leader should choose people from diverse backgrounds who will be able to pass to the next world the correct history and information. Another key consideration should be the expertise, skill or knowledge of the people selected. This is extremely crucial because the group will have to be sufficient since they would not get help from anywhere else for the rest of their lives. If there is a fundamental deficiency, then the whole group could suffer and this might jeopardize their chances of survival.
As a student leader of the remaining CPCC students, I will choose six people who I believe have the best chance to survive under the circumstances for those seven years. I will also choose them based on the qualities I deem important that need to be past to the next generation of mankind. The age of the person selected will also be crucial because it is vital that the selected person will be able to reproduce after seven years. I will choose the following people; Joe Nemesis, Ricky Slive, Sasha Winky, Neila Borg, Armando Pepper and Cindy Smith. This paper will canvas the reasons for my selection and why I think that this group of six is best placed to repopulate the world from among those on the list.
Joe Nemesis
The first person that I will select to enter the shelter is Joe Nemesis. Joe has the advantage of age. At the age of 19 he will only be 26 when the shelter resurfaces after seven years. This will be an ideal age for him to repopulate the world. He also appears to be healthy. This is vital because I would want to select people who will not die before they get an opportunity to make a significant contribution in the next world. Thus a healthy young man will be an ideal first selection. In addition, Joe has recently traveled from Chile to the United States. This puts him in an extremely significant position. First, is that he has a different world view from the Americans. This diversity is important and should be passed to the next world. Secondly, is that, by the fact that he comes from Chile, he knows how the war began. The war that led to the end of the world began with the civil war in Chile. This history and information is extremely crucial to the next generation of people. It would not only help them avert such a disaster, but will give insights into how the previous world destroyed itself. The fact that Joe has lived in the United States and in Chile gives him an advantage as he has become more informed than those who lived in only one county.
Ricky Slive
The second person that I will select will be Ricky Slive. Ricky’s professional experience, expertise and skills as a carpenter will be crucial after the seven years. The six people will come to a new world. Ricky will use his skills to construct shelter for them. It is unclear what dangers will face them and, therefore, it is vital for them to plan ahead. He will also construct the basic household requirements that will be essential for them. More significantly, he will be in a position to inform the next generation about this technology. This will avert a scenario where mankind would have had to revert to crude tools to sustain themselves. Moreover, he will be relatively young at only 34 after they resurface. Another distinguishing feature that makes Ricky viable for this selection is his religious views. He seems to have a totally different perspective from the conventional way of thinking about religion. While most people including those on the list believe that The Almighty is good while Satan is not and the two are on the extreme ends, Ricky believes that Satan is the only true God. This view, however, mistaken according to most people’s views, will serve as a check or an alternative belief to faith to the in the next world.
Sasha Winky
The main reason why the world perished is because of war. It is vital; therefore, that as a leader I select an individual that will be able to avert any conflict arising among the six people and their descendants. This is particularly significant because if the six were to fail to get along, the human race will be over before even the seven years elapse. That is why I will choose Sasha. She has proved to be an excellent mediator and organizer. She will be able to mediate any disputes that would occur in the shelter and in the next world. Hopefully, she will pass those qualities to others. The fact the she is unmarried might also imply her commitment to serving people. In addition, she is an excellent organizer. She can use her skills to organize the six people in effective and efficient ways of managing their resources. The fact that Sasha gender is questionable implies that she will not favor any gender in her mediation and organization. Her leadership skills will also be beneficial. This will avert a situation where mankind reverts back to barbaric ways where women were regarded as subjects to men and sometimes treated as property.
Neil Borg
Neila Borg will also be selected among the six. This is because she has a lot of unique qualities that gives her an edge over others. First and foremost, she is only 21 years old, which means she will be 28 at the end of the hibernation. At 28 years she will be able to bear children who will repopulate the world. Apart from being young, her beliefs represent a person who values family. She believes she was stolen from her home planet as a child. This implies that she will be keen on her children and will protect them at her home. These family values are extremely desirable because it is only through strong family ties that the next world would achieve what has been had been achieved by this world. Her knowledge of the universe will be instrumental in teaching the children that would be borne by the survivors. These children need to understand that there are other planets apart from earth. Her knowledge and information acquired as a librarian should assist the future generation become informed of the progress that science had made in this world. This will go a long way in reshaping the future scientist direction.
Armando Pepper
I cannot stress enough the consequence of these six people staying alive. It is, therefore, vital that Armando joins them. He is a master chef. He will thus ensure that they are feed with the best meals under the circumstances to ensure they remain health. Eating a balanced diet is crucial as it helps a person retain could health and prevent diseases. The chef would also ensure that they use their food resources in a prudent and efficient manner. If the food is misappropriated, then all of them will starve in the shelter and all the preparation and planning would be for nothing. When they resurface on earth, the master chef would also be instrumental in determining what is edible. The survivors would have to feast on wild plants and animals when they resurface. It will be the responsibility of the master chef not only to prepare the meals, but also to determine what is edible. It is worth noting that Armando is gay. This is vital because future generations will need an understanding that people have different sexualities. It is also vital that all future generations, from the onset develop a culture of understanding and accommodating each other irrespective of their sexuality or any other distinguishing feature.
Cindy Smith
Cindy is a 16 year old diabetic child. Her young age was instrumental in the selection. The six people need to be a mix of people who will able to discharge their duties effectively once their shelter resurfaces to the earth after seven years. These people need to be young and energetic once they are back on earth and thus why age is a significant consideration. Although, Cindy is suffering from diabetes, the chance of passing this disease to one’s offspring is a mere 4%. This means that 96% of the chances mothers give birth to normal healthy babies. However, this is an acceptable challenge. In order to ensure that the study and research in medical remains progressive, I will allow the diabetic child to join the group as the sixth person. Future generation of scientists will have a perfect specimen to investigate. The fact the disease is already recognized will save doctors a lot of time and resources. It will serve as a stepping stone to a further research and cure for diseases. In addition to this, Cindy’s sickness will serve to bring out the caring and loving nature of human beings. Its fellow group members will take care of it showing compassion and care. This will serve to enhance the virtues and characteristics of man as a social animal.
