INTRODUCTION
Solid wastes are everything that we throw away daily as unwanted materials. They are also referred to as trash, garbage, refuse, waste materials, and or rubbish. Solid waste is normally considered as an eye sore and at times the stench rising out of a heap of garbage is unpleasant. The first source of solid waste is our residential complexes, sanitation residue, construction debris and street waste which constitute the municipal solid waste. Secondly there are wastes that arise from industrial plants and mining sites. Thirdly are garbage that come up as a result of biomedical or hospital treatment and immunization human. All these constitute the biomedical wastes. Proper techniques and technologies must be employed to handle and dispose the waste. This therefore calls for the participation of the local authority and individuals to handling and disposal of waste.
Solid waste management is any undertaking to ensure proper and safe waste handling and disposal mechanisms are employed. In this paper solid waste management as an environmental resource issue, its management and sustainment plan and finally the challenges of the management plan are discussed.
ACTION ITEMS
The plans that I am going to employ to sustain a cleaner environment free of waste are as follows:
Carrying out a research to find out and identify what various items constitute the country’s garbage. Besides this the garbage will be classified as either municipal waste, industrial waste, or biomedical waste. Another way that they will be classified will be either as recyclable or non-recyclable.
Creating public awareness on refuse handling and environmental effects of some of the waste disposal methods through the media and countrywide road shows.
Equipping urban centers with garbage collection bins along streets, in offices and homes.
Engaging high school leavers to carry out road shows and distribute garbage collection bins.
ACTION STEPS
- Carrying out a research to find out and identify what various items constitute the country’s garbage and classifying them.
- Recruiting high school leavers to carry out road shows and distribute garbage collection bins.
- Training the high school leavers on the importance of proper waste disposal as well as the importance of the program.
- Procuring supply of garbage collection bins.
- Scheduling the dates for the road shows and the date to visit one of the television stations to educate the public on waste disposal.
TIMELINE
In a duration of four months I will have carried a research of the garbage types and classifying the accordingly into types. Thereafter the recruitment of high school leavers will take a maximum of one month duration. Training the recruits on the importance of proper waste disposal and the effects of some of disposal methods will take a maximum of two and half months. The procurement of garbage bins might take three weeks. Finally given the large number of recruits I will need two months to carry out road shows and creating awareness through the media.
