Introduction
The presentation on sustainability and ethics in business proved to be very informative indeed. The speaker talked about the constant struggle that modern businesses are going through in trying to be both ethical and sustainable when it comes to the environment. Sustainability is clearly a very pertinent issue when it comes to the modern business operations.
I had personally been researching on this issue and I had found that companies have recently devised various ways of incorporating sustainability in their daily operations. One of these ways is through the reduction of packaging material and waste. However, in addition to saving money which is actually the primary goal in this initiative, the speaker stated that companies should try to incorporate more spirituality when it comes to this issue. He emphasized that money should not always be the primary issue since and should in fact come second. In regards to these sentiments, I completely agree with him.
Attaining sustainability currently is proving to be a very hard task for companies these days. This is because of the various government rules and regulations that have been enacted and that set guidelines for the sustainability. Many consumers are also starting to be environmentally aware wondering about the impact that the environment may have on their future. The trend nowadays has been for companies to declare themselves as ‘green’ hoping to gain a public appeal. The speaker also talked about the current trend of flourishing of the environment that is emerging. Rather than maintaining it, most the former is gaining precedence. The speaker made it clear that with the current pace, it is virtually impossible for companies to help the environment to recover, they need it to flourish.
In addition the cost of attaining sustainability was also touched on by the presenter. The cost is very high but companies should strive to meet these costs so that they can be more environmentally friendly. Some companies have even started devising new production methods that require fewer chemicals that tend to hurt the natural environment when they leak or are released there. Chemicals are usually present in almost every production aspect and devising new ways of reducing them will be very beneficial to the ecosystem and the environment in general.
In nutshell, I would say that the lecture was very informative indeed and I learnt a lot of new things.
