Sustainability refers to the ability of resources to undergo regeneration, preservation, and sustenance to maintain their value in the future. It entails diligent management of resources by mankind. Sustainability generates and maintains the surroundings in which people and the environment can continue living in productive concord both in their present and future environments. It is important for the tourism sector to embrace sustainability. Sustainable tourism is a form of tourism that meets the wants of the tourists at hand, while defending and enhancing future opportunities. This form of tourism does not compromise the environment and the people’s culture. It aims at providing constructive experience both for the tourists and the locals. Sustainability can be implemented in various sectors and aspects of the tourism industry. Hotels and resorts that host a large number of tourists each year can be a good starting point for implementing sustainability in the tourism sector. As such, these hotels can adopt environmental friendly programs that can be beneficial both to the locals and the tourists. In attempt to foster sustainability in the tourism sector, these hotels can source their products from the local community. Examples of such products can be locally made honey and curio. Through this, the tourists can have a range of products to sample from. At the same time, the culture of the local people may not be disturbed by the tourists’ activities. Through engaging in their local activities, they will be able to earn a living and promote their culture as well.
Sustainability can also be implemented in the travelling component of tourism. Tourists can be encouraged to use tour vehicles that have been moderated to cause less air and noise pollution in the environment. This will ensure that the local environment remains intact and can still be appealing to future generations. Sustainability can further be enhanced in travelling through the help of tour guards. Tourist can be directed by experienced guards who are conversant with the local environment. Under the direction of these guards, the tourists may learn the culture of the people as well as their environment. This will put them at a better position while using the local resources. They will be more careful not to degrade the environment or the people’s culture. These tour guards can be recruited from the local communities. Offering employment in this way, can largely contribute to the development of such communities which is a component of sustainability.
Sustainability is extremely significant in the tourism industry. Implementing proper environmental programs in the industry can largely contribute to sustainability. This will work both to the benefit of tourists and the local communities. Sustainability in this sector can further be implemented through the travelling sector of the industry to accommodate both the needs of the tourists and the locals.
