The event started with a Pasodoble named Amparito Roca. Though the performance was good, it was slow and failed to impress me. But it wasn’t long before my disappointment evaporated and it was the second performance of the event that sparked the show. The performance in true sense set the tone for the rest of the show. The song named ‘Autumn Solliloquy’ by James Barnes wasn’t familiar to me. But I felt an instant and intense connection to the starting music of the song. The talent that James Barnes was blessed as a composer and lyricist was well on display. The song though slow was immensely involving and binding. The song had perfect texture and a rhythm which was simply too good for the crowd. The steady tempo added to the beauty of the lyrics and made the song even more special. But it was the brilliance act of coherence of the performers that simply blew me. The discipline and synchronization that they possessed was simply unbelievable. The beauty of the performance not only lied in the lyrics and original composition of the song, but also in the performance that made it feel smooth and melodious.
The performance had engaged and embroiled me like anything. I had my eyes closed and the lyrics all over my mind. I almost pre assumed that the performance would be the finest of the show, only to be proved wrong later.
The next performances had to have the substance to bring me out of the awe that the earlier performance had pushed me into. The English Folk Song Suite by Ralph Vaughan Williams consisted of three very different movements or performances. March: Seventeen Come Sunday, Intermezzo: My Bonny Boy and March: Folk Songs from Somerset were the three songs that formed the suite. The first performance, though good, failed indeed terribly me in impressing me the way Autumn Solliloquy had did. Throughout the performance I wanted Solliloquy to be repeated. I pre supposed that the next two songs of the suite are going to a disappointment too. The second performance of the suite strengthened by feeling of Solliloquy being the finest performance of the show, but the third movement, March: Folk Songs from Somerset, was different. Though I had never been a fan of folk songs, the song had the perfect rhythm, melody and tempo I had ever heard before in my life. The song started slow with a simple rhythm and lyrical melody, a feature that was the highlight of the song. The energy level of the song increased as the performance went by and it wasn’t long before it gripped each and every individual in the audience. The song had elements of typical military songs and made it easy to realize that the composer was in some way connected to military band. The performance of the band was simply stunning and incredible. The Piccolo player let the perfect texture and taste to the song and was well complemented and assisted by horn players. The intermittent use of Tuba was too good to resist and was a treat to the ears. The performance for once made me forgot where I was. I was humming the tune, tapping my feet to each and every beat that the song had to offer.
I wouldn’t be exaggerating if I contend that I was thrilled after the show. The concert was as perfect as I could have imagined it to be. The energy level through the performances was electrifying and kept the audience at its toes. The show was way to well organized and handled, thanks to the University. It had perfect mix of songs with varied and disparate rhythms, textures, dynamics and genres. The band members were incredible and too talented. The Flutists and Bassoon players were magical and impressed me in particular.
It wasn’t the first time that I was attending a musical concert at university and it wouldn’t be the last time either. But every time I attend an event or concert of such high standard and quality, I feel proud and privileged of my University. These concerts and the band members have instilled in me a sense an thought that talent is the most valuable asset and that there are no substitutes to hard work and dedication. Each of the series of concerts this semester has been different and unique in terms of performances and the talents at display. I am grateful to the authorities at my University for providing me such opportunities, which have not only changed my perceptions and views but have influenced a great deal, of course positively.
