Take Back the Night Film Series is a sequential presentations on the fight for the women freedom in the society. It is majorly concerned with the rights that the women feel that they are being denied by the men. This is the society and calls for the cooperation of all women to take part and work against the ruling of man. The major concerns are in the rape of women, how women can defend themselves among others. This brings the connections with the rape cases that were made in form of presentations in class.
Ever since the saying has it that experience is the best teacher. Nobody could better explain this than Melinda could. Melinda is fresh in high school and is surprised at the many strange faces that she meets on the daily basis. Melinda chose not to talk to people. She keeps quiete for reasons best known to her. The cool and soft lady has a touching story that only the lion hearted can fail to see how bitter she is about it.
After people’s concern about her changed behavior Melinda decides to share a story that none expected to hear. She had kept it to herself not even to her closest friend Rose. Melinda takes her seat and in a very composed look greets the few people whom she decided to share it out with.
Dear friends, many people have raised concern about my changed behavior. I know about it and I don’t regret for the changes that have taken place in me. The only thing worrying me is the cause of the very painful and shameful happening. I can not take it in when I sit back and reflect what my beloved friends could do me. Who can tell the difference between the sheep and the hyena should the hyena be in the sheep’s skin? Neither can I identify. I only came to learn of this after the experiences I had during the last summer holidays.
Friends, the worst thing that should happen to a lady of any kind is rape. Am not afraid sharing this with you? I am very sure that amongst you are the hyenas. I know that amongst you are the good shepherds that can be trusted with the sheep when the owner is away but who can tell me them just by looking at them? After the rape ordeal that I experienced while on holidays, it came to my attention that we should not trust any human being. I also concluded that while letting someone to know about you, let there be a limit otherwise we are bound to lose the dignity that everybody treasures much. I considered that every man for himself. I wanted to go through it alone. The rape ordeal will never get out of my mind.
As a society we must accept the reality that such beasts must exist. However I can’t sit back and see my friends being messed by such people. The worst thing we ladies can do is to be at the back bench when such a case affecting us is being addressed. I would like us to have the mentality that to some extent we can help limit these occurrences. Say no to sexual harassment and you will be a hero. Nobody will see you as a sex tool. Nobody will dare need sex in exchange of a service. Say no and mean it.
To this level we shall be able to contain the deviant elements in our society. We should strengthen, our social control institutions such as the church, family and schools so as to enhance a positive socialization process and other interactive activities. This will go along way to assist in creating a vice free enviroment.
I would like to support the move against any form of oppression to the women in particular. I think the two young men managed to use me because of their physical strength but are sure that they will not get away with it. The case is with the police and very soon justice will play its role. Am assuring you ladies that the power to fight may not be bestowed in the physical strength but the intellect you, you who can think and act accordingly have the power to decide on the course of action to take. I dare challenge you sisters of mine to wake up and join in hands in the fight against women harassment. Yes, last summer was mine. Who knows, may be next is yours. Let us put our hands together to fight the ills and the misconceptions of the past to come up with a moral society, where everyone is given respect on the grounds of his or her humanity and not on gender. Wake up friends and join this series of teachings towards the female and the society as a whole-
May be you may not see the sociological importance of having one voice as ladies but I believe that even you, you see the weight that the majority has in bargaining. Secondly it should come to your attention that the sense of belonging comes forth. This is to mean that despite us living in a society where a fellow human being sees us as lesser beings we have a home where everybody is an equal creation
Apart from the sense of belonging, we also take the general responsibility of being our brothers keepers. Thank you a lot and may we realize the importance in living together as human beings.
