When thinking about a vacation most people automatically think they’re going to have the time of their lives, but in my case, my “vacation” became an emotional massacre. I grew up thinking my life would be perfect but of course nothings ever works out the way we hoped for. My vacation was nothing like the normal vacation. Instead it turned out that I would be moving into a foster home with a house hold full of strangers. People I had never seen before. I never imagined that being away from home would be so upsetting. Nor did I think being away from my brother and sisters would be a problem. This began my “vacation” of being taken away from all that I knew and the people that I loved.
I was just a fourteen-year-old girl trying to live life, but the life I was trying to live was not quite leading down the right path. As the youngest of sixteen children, I wanted to experience everything my siblings did and then some, but I was still too young for many of the things that I was chasing. Growing up I always had high goals set for myself but the problem was these goals did not include school. I was one that really hated attending school, which naturally got me into massive trouble leading me to get taken away from my family. This was how I ended up in a foster home.
With my adrenaline rushing I wondered what my life was going to turn into. I was stuck in the moment, in shock scared for my life having to sleep and wake up in a house filled with people I have never seen before. At that point I felt my life was over and there was no going back. Crying myself to sleep every night, wondering what my next move was going to be because I could not handle living in a foster home. I had to follow rules that never applied to me, which included a set bed time that seemed so juvenile. All the fun and partying was over for me, and I despised what my life had become.
As a fourteen year old girl I did not realize that everything happens for a reason and that this would lead me towards a better path in the long run. Instead of being forced to live with strangers, I looked into my aunt becoming my foster mother. I was so thankful my aunt Grisel was willing to become my foster mother. Considering she was my relative I was under the impression that my life was about to get much easier and that I would be back to doing whatever I wanted to do, but I was entirely wrong.
Once my aunt became my foster mother I went back to my old ways becoming rebellious not complying to any of the rules she wanted me to follow. I started sneaking out the house every Friday and Saturday to go party with my friends, until one day I was caught. My aunt was forced to become strict and began locking my window so that my only option to get back in the house if I snuck out was through knocking on the front door. Keep in mind I was notorious for sneaking back into the house at five in the morning, but not anymore. I started driving myself crazy trying to figure out how to continue sneaking out and doing whatever I thought was best for me, even if that meant sleeping outside.
Finally one day when I returned home from having snuck out I came crying into the house as my aunt ran out of options. She was forced to call the cops to inform them that I was not following the rules that were set by DCF. As a foster child there were rules that had to be followed or there would be a price to pay. I couldn’t help but to cry over and over again begging my aunt not to call the department of child services and the police. I felt at home and loved with my aunt and I needed the right guidance which I knew my aunt could provide, which is why she was chosen as my foster mother. I knew she would change me as a person and help me overcome my situation. Luckily she didn’t call either of them and instead she looked at me and said “mama I know this is difficult and new to you, but in order for me to help you I need you to work with me and follow the rules I set for you.”
Months later I finally got my act together improving on a lot of things. Most importantly I went to school every day and joined school activities to keep myself occupied with my mind on the right track. For two years Grisel was my foster mom, she helped me through a lot helped me view life differently. She taught me a more responsible way, which my mother should have done but was unable to teach me. My attitude towards all the rules that were set for me had changed, and even if I didn’t like the loss of freedom I honestly began to appreciate this new structure in my life. If it wasn’t for Grisel I wouldn’t have changed my life nor would I be the girl I am today. The things I valued most were not the best for a teenager and there was another reality to life that was more important that would take me farther than the old life. Living with my Aunt Grisel, I learned that I must think about my actions and that there is a time and place for me to experience all that I was pushing for at just fourteen. Fortunately, this vacation to the foster home was my saving grace and I am thankful that my less than ideal “vacation” turned out to help me tremendously in the long run, which was the most important thing.
