Admission Essay
I seek admission to the prestigious NC State University as I believe it is the university that presents me with the best opportunity to achieve my career aspirations. One of the principal reasons for seeking admission to this university is that it has a well-founded engineering program. Such a program will present me with the ideal opportunity of interacting with world-class faculty as well as some of the best brains in the field of engineering. I also believe that such an environment will significantly enhance my career goal of becoming a top notch engineer. Furthermore, the university is located close to my home. This was an essential factor I considered in seeking admission to this university as studying near my home will enable me to keep close to my family. The university also has a good learning atmosphere and well-designed programs that I found to be very appealing.
I have always believed in achieving a balance between all the essential aspects of life. In pursuit of this goal, I have involved myself in various extracurricular activities, some of which have significantly influenced me. For instance, it is my membership and active participation in my FIRST robotics club which aroused my interest the field of engineering. Apart from the Robotics Club, I have also been an active member of other clubs such as the Key Club and the Beta Club. Additionally, I have been a member of the Cary Teen Council as well as a Wakemed Volunteer. Cumulatively, I have interned and volunteered for about 400 hours. I value the community very much. This explains the reasons for my participation in numerous community service activities. I have also taken violin, guitar, taekwondo and shaka classes.
In my three years in high school leading to 11th Grade, I faced various challenges which affected my performance in school. In my 11th grade, my Dad had a hip replacement in the first semester of school and my mom had a foot surgery in the second semester. The circumstances forced me to take on additional family responsibilities. I devoted a lot of time to be with my parents during their illness and recuperation. This was a particularly difficult period for me as it was an almost insurmountable task to balance between family, school and extracurricular activities. I chose to focus on family since family is very dear to me. This was at the expense of my education and inevitably, this was reflected in my grades. However, after they both healed, I set out to come up with a new study plan so as to improve my grades and ensure I maintain the right balance among the various competing interests. The experiences during the illness of my parents provided me with the necessary impetus to forge ahead even much more determined. Consequently, I was able to come up with a balanced life and study plan which has been working successfully thus far in my 12th grade as reflected by the strong grades that I have continually registered. I also never give up easily. This is highly evident by the fact that irrespective of failing to perform well in Calculus BC during 11th grade, I decided to retake the unit.
I find engineering to be a very interesting field as it involves proving solutions that make people’s lives better on earth. Furthermore, engineering is very dynamic with new improvements and innovations being made every day. These, added to the challenging nature of the engineering field are what have strongly drawn me to pursue a career in this field.
