I was oblivious of the fact that tattoos existed during my younger years. This is probably because I had never seen anyone with a tattoo in high school. Eventually, when I joined college, I met a classmate who got a tattoo. Later on, the person whom I dated happened to have a tattoo. Tattoos then started popping out at me giving me exposure with those two people. I noticed that more and more students in Campus had tattoos embedded in their skin. I began to develop an interest in tattoos though I had initially been opposed to them. Opposing tattoos was an opinion that I had adopted from my mother. The infiltration of the tattoos into my life made me change my mindset, and hence, I reevaluated my opinion. Are tattoos actually as bad as my mother purported?
Tattooing dates back from the 5th to 4th millennium BC, and the tattoos are as diverse as the people who wear them. Tattoos are inked for various purposes including status, art, tribute, love, fashion, aesthetic, nationalism, culture and portrayal of patriotism. I, therefore, chose tattoos as my topic in order to identify the society’s changing perception of the tattoos over the years.
The European explorers incorporated tattoos into the western world. The Europeans got mesmerized by the tattoos and eagerly paid money in order to view the tattooed attractions. However, the Europeans regarded the tattoos as hallmarks of the primitive especially during the 17th to 19th centuries. Nevertheless, the tattoos later appealed to the upper class who transformed it into an avenue of social capital. The tattooing profession experienced a renaissance following the liberation movements that occurred between the 1960s and 1970s hence its perception was broadened in the United States.
Consequently, my discussion of tattoos neither intends to portray tattooing as unacceptable nor acceptable. The project aims at creating awareness especially among the students on how external influence can impact individual’s opinions. To date, the media have exaggerated on its association of tattoos with deviant groups and celebrities and this has persuaded the society’s perception of tattoos. The project will, therefore, encourage people to view broadly accepted perceptions with skepticism thus obliging them to conduct their investigations, and extensive research hence enabling them to come up with substantiated facts.
