The teaching goals rated as essential are to develop ability to apply principles and generalizations already learned to new problems and situations, develop problem-solving skills, develop ability to draw reasonable inferences from observations, develop ability to synthesize and integrate information and ideas, develop ability to think creatively, improve skill at paying attention, learn concepts and theories of this subject, learn techniques and methods used to gain new knowledge in this subject, develop a commitment to exercise the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, improve ability to follow directions, instructions, and plans, improve ability to organize and use time effectively, develop a commitment to personal achievement, develop ability to perform skillfully, improve self-esteem/self-confidence, cultivate an active commitment to honesty, develop capacity to think for one’s self and providing a role model for students (Angelo & Cross, 1993).
I feel that these results have enlightened and made me see clearly the specific goals that I need to work on, to accomplish my goals on a personal level and as a teacher.
According to the results, higher thinking skills and personal development are essential in this course. Higher thinking skills such as problem-solving skills place the teachers in a better position to solve the problems they face in not only the classrooms and staffrooms but also give advice to students who face problems. Personal development skills such as improving one’s self-esteem are vital since they place the teacher in a better position to interact and bond with colleagues and students (Garet et al., 2001). Personal development skills are needed for the teacher to be able to act as a good role model to the students.
Completing this exercise has changed my ideas about essential teaching goals. Initially, I thought basic academic success skills should be more than any other goals. After completing this exercise, I have learned that higher thinking skills and personal development skills should be more to see to the success of the other targets.
I would not expect the teaching goals to vary by discipline. This is because irrespective of the discipline the main point in teaching is delivering or rather passing knowledge. Therefore, all the goals are set to ensure that this primary point is successfully achieved. Hence, I do not expect teaching goals to vary by discipline since the main point in teaching is the same across all disciplines.
The assignment was very helpful to me. From this assignment, I learned about the goals I need to put more emphasis on. After evaluation, I became aware that these aims would see to the success of my teaching career.
