There are many kinds of shavers available in the market. The electric shaver is the most popular due to its effectiveness, multi- function ability, and convenient recharge. Electric shavers work through a motor which propels the blades (Fix-It-Club, n.d). There is a screen which captures the hair, keeping them straight and held n place so that the blades can cut them. A shaver can have multiple blades, depending on manufacturer specifications. The more the blades the better the shave. There are two types of electric shavers, the rotary and the foil. Both types work well, but are suited for different uses and also depend on individual preference. Electric shavers are more efficient than manual shavers, even though they cost as much as 200% more. However, electric shavers do not require any replacement and only incur extra costs when they breakdown. They use different technologies in their make and their operational mechanism.
Foil electric shaver
These are shavers that are covered with a thin foil, metallic layer, which act as a protective layer on the blades of the shaver. The foil electric shavers have tiny holes which hold the hair strands making it possible to shave very close to the body. Close shaving results in a very smooth finish (Infovisual, 2011).
The blades are arranged under foils with small holes. They move at very high frequencies, rotating and pushing the hair up before cutting, shaving very close to the skin. The motor moves the rows of blades backward and forwards, using an oscillator (Fix-it-club, n.d).
Foil shavers are good for:
Long hairs
Sensitive skin
Frequent shavers
Hair growing in a single determined direction
Those who aim at having a very clean finish
Rotary electric shavers
These shavers have a revolving top with three shaving heads with each having its own, screen, blades and gear. The heads move in circular motion in unison, and the shaver is also used in a circular motion, this rotation helps the shaving to move along the contours of the face. It shaves by the hair getting caught up in the open spaces where the blades cut them off completely (Infovisual, 2011).
They have three round blades arranged in a triangular pattern. They have circular motion which allows for shaving in any direction, and cuts long hair effectively.
According to a mechanical repair website, rotary blades are good for (Fix-it-Club, n.d):
Thick hair
Prefer no noise
Hair growing in many directions
Non-sensitive skin
Parts of a shaver
All shavers, regardless of shaving mechanism have the following common parts:
Shaving unit- This is the part that does the shaving
Switch- this is a button that controls the equipment on and off.
Line cord- It transmits power from the source to the machine.
Clippers- sharp long blades that help in trimming very long hair.
Protective cover- A plastic of metallic cover put on the blades to protect when not in use and prevent the blades from getting damaged.
Cleaning brush: Comes separately, has soft bristles and is used for cleaning the machine.
