Mark Kennedy is right at some point when he said that “All of the biggest technological inventions created by man – the airplane, the automobile, the computer – says little about his intelligence, but speaks volumes about his laziness”. Although man’s intelligence brought about the numerous technological advantages mankind is experiencing today, the main driver behind these inventions is man’s laziness. If we look back and see why most of the technological inventions exist today, we can come to realize that most of these inventions are geared towards making work easier for man.
Take the case of the invention of automobiles. These major technological inventions were developed in order for man to reduce their need for walking especially long distances. Today, most people find vehicles as a necessity rather than just an extra asset whom they can live without. Because of the laziness of man brought about by these automobiles, some people find the need to ride a vehicle even if the place they are going is just a mere 50 meters away. Man had developed the laziness of walking because of this contributing to the inactiveness of man which is causing major health problems to him.
The IT industry is one of the major aspects of technological illustrating how these inventions shows the laziness of the man specifically all inventions related to smarthomes. Smarthomes is the utilization of smart devices to make things work easier for man (howstuffsworks.com, 2012). Our televisions have remote controls and timers which contributes to the illustration of the laziness of man. Instead of walking over to the television to change or turn it off, the remote could be used or its timer could be turn on so that automatically it can turn off after a specific amount of time. Even the doors, windows lights and other devices can be programmed so that they can be turned on and off or opened or closed with minimal intervention of man. Simple appliances are made smart to be able to do what man can do with minimal intervention from him. All of these has made man more lazy because all of these inventions require him to take less action.
All of mans inventions are indeed helpful to him but the fact that these are helpful to him because these inventions requires him to do less cannot be avoided. There are some things that man can do well even without the help of these inventions but because he knows that there is an invention that could do the same thing, he makes that invention a necessity rather than just an alternative way.
