1. Collaborative tools:
More often than not, the information technology department of an organization will not seek the views of other employees when introducing new office tools. They instead impose new office tools within the organization. Such organizations need to be aware that Software user experience varies between employees. Be it Skype, MS Communicator or Lotus project, for software to be effective, the users (employees) should be involved in selection processes. Only when their views on software’s anticipation of their needs, ease of use, content and effectiveness are sought, will communication be flexible. It would be a tremendous waste of time and money to have shelf-ware software.
2. Virtual workforce for a virtual office:
An interesting concept of a people-cloud is taking root. Germany's Karisruhe Service institute is a case in employing virtual labour for non-automated tasks. Temporary work-at-home employees can now handle basic tasks. However, like Karisruhe, firms should track employee ratings for quality virtual employment agencies. This ensures a high quality worker gets jobs often.
3. The benefits of not working in a virtual setting:
Working in a centralized office has numerous benefits when compared to a virtual setting. A centralized office has more friendships, trust, interaction and higher productivity. A best friend at work increases job engagement, customer engagement, quality of work, well being and reduces injury 7 fold, (Gallup). Virtual settings on the other hand reduce overhead costs and increase productivity but are prone to unscrupulous employees who may need supervision. They also do not help create beneficial friendships. Gallup Studies point out that those one without a best friend at work have an 8% chance of being dedicated at work.
