Lack of Vendor Visibility in Cloud
James Bourne in his article presents an imminent problem that the cloud providers are facing with regards to customer satisfaction. The article highlights data from SANS Institute to back the claims that cloud vendors are having a hard time in keeping their customers happy. The article by Bourne further makes its premise by a report by CloudPassage where an interview with 485 IT professionals was conducted. The article “Lack of Vendor Visibility” highlights the pain points of customers that have come up in a study. The article states responses from customers and gives a percentage for highlighting the dissatisfaction index. A logical approach is gathered from the study that is presented in a very precise manner by Bourne. The article highlights the salient points from the reviewed study and informs that Hybrid cloud is something that is gaining much popularity and acceptance. The article observes that visibility in the cloud environments, incident-response implementation, and testing processes remain a challenge for both the cloud vendors and the users of the cloud environment as well. The article also puts some direct quotes from the author of the SANS report, thereby giving much credibility to itself. The complete article is based on one report from SANS, however at the end, the author cites some more examples and reports that show the growing dissatisfaction amongst customers towards their cloud vendors adding, in the end, some sentiments and direct responses of customers (Bourne).
The chapter “Issues in Cloud SaaS” is supported by the article of James Bourne. The issues in cloud SaaS are highlighted in the article by Bourne. The chapter talks about security issues in cloud SaaS, and the article also talks about security issues as a major concern that is shared by customers in a study highlighted by the article. The article presents survey results from a SANS study. Based on the responses by the participants, a major concern that came up was that of security where customers felt that cloud vendors are not providing enough visibility into the issues that are present and the vulnerabilities that could be a target of attacks by hackers and other imposters. In the second and third paragraph of the article, the author talks about vulnerabilities and unauthorized data access as being a major fear of customers, thereby supporting the chapter on “Issues in Cloud SaaS” where security and cloud vulnerabilities are raised as a major concern. The article highlights in the third paragraph that for public cloud DoS (Denial of Service) attacks are the biggest threats while for private clouds malware are a threat (Bourne)
The article by James Bourne is very interesting, and it highlights a major concern that is prevalent and attached to the emerging technology of cloud computing, especially in the area of public clouds. The topic covered by the article is just one part of the cloud issues being faced by the vendors and the customers of the cloud providers. The article is very brief is terms of its information and does not provide further details into the issues raised like that of DoS and Malware threats present in public and private clouds. James Bourne has mostly based his article on the survey and study conducted by SANS. It could be said that he has done a good job in summarizing and presenting that SANS study in a very crisp format. However, the information presented is not unique, and it lacks depth and details.
