Overview
Technology has both positive and negative implications on the lives of the people. The proliferation and advancement of technology tools have enormous effects on the lives of the people with respect to the odds of space and time thereby influencing the nature of social interactions. In particular, the technological advancements have direct effects on social evolution and social interaction across the globe, especially on the internet. The relationship between technology and social development results in the new realities of the individuals and the society. In particular, the relation between the society and technology encompasses the social networks sites, modern tools of communication and the virtual communities, which influences the social skills and social life. For instance, the advancements in gaming development and televisions have significant effects on the evolution of the social skills, leisure, and entertainment. The development of online games plays a central role in shaping the behavior of the children who spent most of their time playing such games. Additionally, the introduction and the advancement in mobile technology influenced the social lives in a positive angle through effective and efficient communication in the society in general.
Moreover, the internet provides useful platforms for education and online learning to both the students and their teachers. The advancements in technology also portray profound positive effects in the fields of agriculture and medical research thereby promoting the improvement of the lives of the people in the global community. The technological innovations and discoveries lead to the development of new drugs and improved crops thereby boosting food production and food security in various parts of the world.
In addition, the changes in technology led to various problems on the health, social lives, and communication among people. The aspects of privacy and security of information faced numerous threats owing to the application of technological developments by human beings. The education sector also encountered a myriad of challenges in adopting the new technological advancements thereby compromising the quality of the education systems. Moreover, the technological advancements in research led to massive destructions through nuclear weapons thereby affecting the lives of the people in a negative manner.
Positive Effects
Technology is a double-edged sword that means it can contribute either positively or negatively to the lives of people. However, numerous positive effects came to our lives thanks to technology. They include good and clear communication, facilitating trade and growth of industries, influencing positively and in a huge way to the education system, enabling invention and application of modern medicine and enabling families to keep relations. In particular, they link to each other all the time, facilitating the fast growth of the globalization phenomenon, making research and access to information more fast and accurate and finally facilitating the ability of web seminars to take place even for individuals from long distances.
The medicine world is one of the most positively impacted and revolutionized by technology as the process and quality of medical care has continued to register higher and higher standards for a long time. Today serious and fatal diseases such as cancer and HIV/AIDS are preventable if detected early enough. Technology has provided equipment that can be used for the detection early enough and has in the process saved many lives and contributed to strong and healthy nations. Organ transplants can now be done efficiently and fast enough to save people’s lives preventing numerous complications incurred in the process. The process of diagnosis and prescription by doctors has also received reprieve with information about the several diseases readily available therefore reducing cases of misdiagnosis significantly. The medics can also be able to share information on the common challenges and triumphs in the medical field and this directly affects the quality of health care given to the people making the main beneficiaries in the long run. The modern hospitals have been into state of the art and paired with the latest technologies to provide the best health care available making better treatment of patients a dream come true. The manufacturing of medicine and research on new medicines increased significantly and efficiently with the introduction of new technologies eradicating the most chronic diseases and finding vaccinations for the others that are yet to find a cure.
Additionally, data diagnosis in the medical field is one of the key factors to be considered in order to contain epidemics and outbreaks in an area and this tool has made it faster as it is more accurate in its findings. There are even mobile applications that doctors are using on a daily basis to monitor the personal health of their patients by tracking their behaviors, heart rates and the sleeping patterns that tend to provide accurate information. An accelerated experimentation of medical research such as the recent ones of Zika virus and Ebola outbreaks have fastened the process of containment of the diseases saving more lives and containing the spread of the diseases. The medical providers can now provide their patients with a long time sought medical records that they can now access remotely from portals provided the Medicare teams which improve the interaction of doctor with their patients ultimately contributing to better medicate and improving people’s lives in a great way ("6 Ways Technology Has Changed Healthcare for the Better," 2014).
Communication is another factor that has experienced serious technological revolutions and improved greatly how people relate to each other and their access to information. The consumption of news and how the media packaged them in the recent years has every indication that technology is the way to go. The print and broadcast media have in the recent years have had to compete for viewers and communication with the amateur publishers who post controversial and sometimes untruthful information but are able to garner many viewers who consume the content in large numbers. Many broadcast media have had to adapt and have developed their own blogs and social media accounts to compete and remain relevant in the course of their business. Twitter and Facebook in the recent years have been the first places where readers go for the breaking news where they read and share the information forcing the mainstream media to stamp their presence in the platforms as well and this has ultimately made news more readily available. Research shows that 11% of the news was paid online, 26% was accessed using the handheld smartphones, and around 32% of the news was shared through social media platforms and mostly emails. Marketing has also experienced a revolution by the technological force and companies can no longer rely on the traditional methods of advertising to reach their target audience and have been forced to use online ads such as Google ads that can make people more interested in their products. Some companies have even developed and implemented online feedback programs where customers can give them complaints and compliments on the products they are buying.
Furthermore, this changed drastically people’s way of knowing about new products in the markets and communication between the companies and their customers. The growth of communication devices such as hand-held mobile phones and computers have affected people’s lives in a great way, as one can now be able to connect freely with family, friends, and relatives, even work colleagues and keep the communication lines open. The phenomenon has strengthened relations, brought people more close to each other, and made them more involved in each other’s lives. One can now be able to communicate with their families even when on some long-distance occasions where face to face communication is not possible. Public address systems are also a key component of communication in the technological revolution as it enables one to speak to a large audience without necessarily shouting at the top of their voices making it an efficient and seamless thing to do. Work emails have now become the norm as all official communications are put through them making any official records easily accessible to any organization employees who are more than glad to stay abreast with the happenings in their places of work. Social media platforms such as Facebook and twitter have made public relations an uphill task but have also served to make any organization's accessibility very broad in terms of the audience. This trend has made companies susceptible to misrepresentation of facts whenever they interact with the public or the media making them more careful and developing communication plans in the case of such a crisis. Thus, the impact of communication on people’s lives cannot be overstated as it has transformed lives and the way people interact in many ways ("5 Ways Technology Has Changed Communication | American University," 2015).
Transportation is another key pillar in society impacted positively by the technological revolution. So much has changed from the way we plan our travel to the time taken to travel and even how we pay for our travel expenses. In the olden days, a lot of time would be taken to prepare and plan for vacations or any work travel that is needed. Technology revolutionized all that by introducing portals where buses and flights could be booked in advance from the comfort of your devices and the costs and time of running around declines drastically. Even the taxi companies like Uber came up with mobile applications that enable one to request for a ride with the use of their mobile phone. Today Uber alone has some 40 million monthly users said to be active while around 14% of the drivers are women making the company record huge earnings in revenues and becoming one of the largest in the industry. Many flights do not accept manual booking of flight as it wastes a lot of time and makes data difficult to analyze at the end. The invention of fast and luxurious planes all thanks to technology has helped revolutionizes the air transport sector as places where not long ago people took a long time to travel is now reachable in only a matter of hours. This phenomenon has been a huge way changed how people operate largely because of the number of hours’ people have at their disposal and have redirected to doing other important things that are of priority to them and is definitely a positive impact on everyone. Another huge part technology has had a huge role is the packaging and transportation of products from companies to their destination markets. The process has been made easy with the use of conveyor belts and the use of cranes to arrange neatly and load the products to the transporting vehicles that have seen the delivery time of products to customers reduce drastically and the process proving to be more efficient than the manual setup. The automated booking of trains and buses gave also been the center of technological revolution with the booking and timed stops that are automatic and more accurate and efficient allowing travelers to have flexible routines and align their schedules accordingly together with the travel schedules. This has revolutionized in a big way the way people operate their daily lives and even how business takes place. Technology has been the main driver in rail transport with innovations driving the industry. The innovations have led to faster trains and increased the comfort accorded to the passengers and drastically transformed the time travelers take to travel from place to place. Business people lives have been transformed for the better as they can now safely transport their goods in huge tons and deliver their products on time to their customers leading to more earnings in revenue ("Ideas coming down the track | The Economist," 2013).
Agriculture is another huge and positive sector positively influenced by technology and transformed people’s lives in a significant way. There are many ways farmers and the farming techniques transformed agriculture for many years saving time and money for farmers and yielding them produce that have been satisfying. From using technology to electrifying their farming processes to implementing efficient and fast transportation systems and ultimately using technology to sell their produce to high-end customers who are more than willing to pay much and earn the farmers some good revenue in the long run. Farmers to cultivate their farms have used machines severally by use of tractors to plow and harvesters to process the process easily and efficiently. This reduces the time taken undertaking these activities and boosting the production rate for the farmers. Farmers have also applied technology by applying modern transportation equipment such as air transport that makes possible for consumers in Europe consume goods from Africa in a short span of time with a lot of efficiency and quality of goods maintained. Cooling facilities automated by modern technology are useful in delivering perishable goods such as tomatoes and milk products to reach the destined markets on time and when they are still fresh saving the farmers more money. The situation becomes a win-win one for both the consumers who get fresh products and the farmers who get to sell their produce and earn good money. Irrigation of plants in dry areas became viable through technologies developed to help farmers in such projects. Advanced water sprinklers used mainly to irrigate large farms helping them attain the water sufficiency needed for growth of the produce yielding the farmers much needed revenue to grow their businesses. Breeding of animals and crops that are resistant to droughts and diseases is another agricultural venture majorly assisted by technology that enabled animals that produce more yields produced genetically. Cross breeding is a good animal breeding activity assisted by technological means to enable more strong and productive yields that will guarantee quality products for the customers. Technology in agriculture has resulted in the development of animal feeds that served to solve the challenge of looking for grass to feed livestock. It is now possible to manufacture and sell most of the most of the feeds at modest prices that are fair to the farmers in the long run and enable the farmers to have continuity in their production ("Use of Technology In Agriculture - Use of Technology," 2012).
In the education sector of each country, there are significant contributions associated with technological advancement. In most educational centers around the world, the educational systems tend to employ the various aspects of technology (Skinner 2016). In most lessons, the instructors employ various information storage gadgets, for example, the flash disks to keep the notes for the various lessons. Technology aids better simulations as well as models that enable the learners to assess the progress of the various experiments that take place in the laboratories (Skinner, 2016). In so doing, the students plant the seeds in virtual conservatories, observing the conditions of the various conditions. As a result, it makes it easy to learn from the experimental activities that take place over an online platform. Technology aids the global learning in the education sector. It is possible for a native speaker living in another country to conduct lessons through video conferencing (Skinner, 2016). Through the social interactions, the learners get to acquire the skills necessary for them to go about their educational endeavors.
Additionally, technology makes it possible for learners to access the various cultures found on a global span (Skinner, 2016). It is another form of exposure for the learners because they will get to access information from the various sources that may be applicable on a global arena. Moreover, the application of probes and sensors in delivering educational information to the learners tend to improve the quality of the academic knowledge in the students (Skinner, 2016). In the contemporary era, there exist classrooms that make use of ultrasonic motion sensors in demonstrating particular concepts in the various subjects.
The technology aids a more efficient assessment of the educational system in the sector (Skinner 2016). It makes it possible for the instructor to assess the understanding of the topic by preparing questions for the students about the topic under study and producing the PowerPoint presentations to aid the delivery of such data in class (Skinner 2016). In so doing, the use of dusty materials like chalks ceases to apply in most teaching activities.
Finally, technology presented the electronic books, to enable the access of information on various topics (Skinner, 2016). The access of information from the various parts of the world makes it possible for students to have a wider knowledge of approaches regarding the application of various concepts.
The Negative Effects
Technological is one of the major factors affecting the lives of individuals in the contemporary era. The negative impacts of technology on the lives of most people grew in the contemporary era to be an issue of concern and that makes it necessary to conduct research on such impacts. To begin with, technology has created a sense of isolation of people from most important groups in their lives. Based on research findings, estimation of the rate of growth of the isolation from family and peers fluctuates at a value of 60%. The percentage of the number of people facing such a challenge continue to grow daily because of the continuous advancement in technology (Hsieh, 2012).
People isolate themselves walking around with iPods, ipads as well as other gadgets that make them move out of the environment of other people. Research associates a shorter life span on the people who isolate themselves from the various groups. According to (Hsieh, 2012), over 12 % Americans lack the discussion confidants, and among the adults, about 36% lack the people to talk to in their homes, because their young ones spent most of their time in video games and watching soccer.
Secondly, technology leads to the lack of the vital social skills among individuals. The use of the social media diminishes the need for people to meet face-to-face, hence leading to the loss of the social skills (Sloss, 2015). The people who lack the appropriate social skills to enable them to live in different environments face a significant range of challenges because they restrict themselves to selected environments hence not exposed to various ways of dealing with social problems common in society today. The research conducted about the online casino Yazino show that at least one in four people socialize over the internet but not one on one meeting (Sloss, 2015).
Thirdly, technology is one of the major causes of obesity amongst people. For example, when people spend most of their time engrossed in video games, watching videos on youtube, as well as spending most of the time chatting with friends online; they allocate a small amount of time on activities like exercising (Sloss, 2015). Additionally, people will spend time preparing quality food for themselves and tend to depend on junky foods that lead to obesity. Based on the estimations of research, over 70% of the younger generation spend less time in the kitchen and foods associated with a high potential to obesity fetch great profits in the market due to high demand (Sloss, 2015).
Additionally, technology leads to depression associated with lack of human contact. In that connection depression also results from a lack of exercise, as suggested by various researchers (Sloss, 2015). It is imprudent to blame the pharmaceutical industries for an increased use of antidepressants because the lifestyle of people took a new direction since the adoption of the new technology in the wake of civilization. Over 60% of the young people spend most of their time browsing the internet, hence giving no time to other activities that lead to a better lifestyle, ending up depending on pills to induce better living as suggested by (Hsieh, 2012).
Technology also leads to poor sleeping habits. For example, most of the young people sleep while scrolling their mobile phones, hence taking a posture that involves bending of the neck for a long time, leading imbalance in blood supply to the brain (Szklo-Coxe, Young, Peppard, Finn, & Benca, 2010). As a result, a person tends to get used to that habit, using it as a routine of their sleeping. According to (Szklo-Coxe, Young, Peppard, Finn, & Benca, 2010), 95% of the young adults in America developed habits of sleeping through the addiction to the electronic gadgets.
Technology led to increased levels of pollution. The abandoned electronic gadgets make most of the waste in dumping sites in most parts of the world. As a result, the levels of toxicity of the same waste tend to increase significantly leading to land as well as air pollution (Ewasteguide.info, 2017). It is evident that most industries do not follow the appropriate procedures in disposing of the electronic waste; hence, the toxic chemicals tend to find their way into water bodies leading to the emergence of various health problems that disturb communities.
According to (Ewasteguide.info, 2017), halogenated compounds in condensers and transformers causes some of the cases associated with cancer, and it is increasing the mortality rate in most industrialized cities across the world. As a result, most of the cases that lead to the production of the hazardous waste results from the technologically advanced processes.
The increased rate of the cases of bullying is a consequence of the technological improvement. In most parts of the world, bullies tend to infiltrate into the homes of people through hacking security systems or accessing them via other online avenues (Szklo-Coxe, Young, Peppard, Finn, & Benca, 2010). Cyber-bullying is also on the rise and it is one of the causes of teenage suicide. As technology continues to advance, the bullies also develop new ways of executing their criminal offenses, hence putting the lives of those adopting the technologies at risk.
Technology leads to lack of privacy. Most importantly, the internet has led to the loss of privacy in the world. Research shows that a few flicks on the keyboard of a computer render one’s information at risk of access by third parties. In particular, it is safe for a person to reduce the access to the internet to keep their information private, by reducing access to the same by various people (Szklo-Coxe, Young, Peppard, Finn, & Benca, 2010). For instance, in the last four months, a case of hacking took place involving Chinese hackers getting access to the information in New York Times Computers.
Technology has led to increased cases of deceit. In conjunction with the diminished levels of privacy, most of the people take advantage and deceive others over the internet. Through the creation of false profiles, cases of impersonation are on the rise due to the ability of the internet offer an opportunity for people to commit such crimes (Szklo-Coxe, Young, Peppard, Finn, & Benca, 2010). Research shows that in various parts of the world people lose money and other resources to fraudsters who use the internet as a means of deceiving others.
Additionally, it is evident based on research findings that technology has a warped sense of reality. It is easy to escape real life situations using the internet. It is only over the internet that people can execute Photoshop to avoid the reality of things (Szklo-Coxe, Young, Peppard, Finn, & Benca, 2010). The internet makes a person a “freaking rock star” having enough friends around them, though it is unfortunate that they might never meet most of them. Therefore, the internet can give a person an avenue to avoid reality.
Moreover, the internet leads to an additional layer of stress in the sense that people get bored about the intermittent connections to the internet (Szklo-Coxe, Young, Peppard, Finn, & Benca, 2010). Sometimes when one intends to do something important with the internet, for example, a student trying to submit an urgent assignment over the internet, the network develops problems and times out. The student develops stress due to the issue, especially when the deadline for submission arrives.
The technology is a key factor raising the cases of health problems among the users. One common example is the development of the tendonitis in the thumbs of a person (Sloss, 2015). It is a form of a strain injury, which results from the frequent pressing of buttons of a mobile phone or any other device. The same injury develops when one plays video games for a longer period.
Technology leads to the lack of social boundaries. The overuse of the social media led to an increased tendency to cross the social boundaries (Sloss, 2015). For example, people can send unsolicited nude photos to sites visited be, most people, hence corrupting most people’s minds. The internet is a platform that connects many people and regardless of their relationships, undesired information gets into inappropriate hands.
Additionally, technology contributes to the lack of sexual boundaries among communities and various groups of people (Kross, Verduyn, Demiralp, Park, Lee, Lin, & Ybarra, 2013). Research shows that the exposure to sexual information takes place over the internet and the young generation gets to access most of the dirty information found on the social platforms. Through the internet, the children will be able to access information about pornography, rendering their parents’ efforts to hide such information useless.
Technology contributes to the negative developmental issues in children. The opportunity a child gets to access immoral information on the internet presents a very dangerous situation among them (Kross, Verduyn, Demiralp, Park, Lee, Lin, & Ybarra, 2013). All the negative effects the adults find on the internet extrapolate in the minds of children as they grow up when they encounter such information.
With the unlimited access to the internet, the future of the younger generation is in limbo. At the current rate, researchers estimate that in the next few years, over
60% of the young generation suffer the shortage of morals due to exposure to the corrupt media information (Kross, Verduyn, Demiralp, Park, Lee, Lin, & Ybarra, 2013).
Neurosis is another significant negative impact of technology. It leads to various suffering from the mental disturbances as well as the emotional. Such disturbances include such things, as delusion, anxiety, as well as phobia are signs of neurosis (Kross, Verduyn, Demiralp, Park, Lee, Lin, & Ybarra, 2013). It manifests for example when a person encounters information that convinces them that they are critically ill, or making a video that goes viral makes one think that they are famous.
In connection to neurosis, the advancement in technology causes the neck and head pain. When a person looks down for a long time, looking at the devices such as the phone, tends to lead to a situation in which the neck loses the natural curves (Bolton et al., 2013). Additionally, when a person strains while looking at the screen of the gadget, for example, the phone, or the iPod. They develop eyestrain as well as headaches.
The same issue causes blurred vision as well as the migraines (Bolton et al., 2013). Therefore, the health effects associated with the advancement in technology, tend to disturb people in a greater way because many people lose struggle with the diseases for a long time before, they recover.
In addition, technology causes the loss of eyesight and hearing. The use of headphones causes people to lose hearing. Most of the young people like walking around listening to music through the headphones (Bolton et al., 2013). As a result, the exposure to loud music for a long period leads to a systematic development of hearing impairments. Research shows that 80% of the young people across the world developed a habit of listening to music using headphones (Bolton et al., 2013). However, the research proposes the goodness of creating a balance, so that person can avoid being a zombie.
Technology is leading to an increased rate of energy consumption. Although the technology is creating means of saving energy, most people do not turn off their electronic gadgets when they are not in use (Bolton et al., 2013). In most offices, it is common for most people to leave computers plugged into the electric sockets, mobile devices, as well as televisions for a long time hence leading to the wastage of electric power. In that connection, the manufacturer of the high-tech toys leads to the release of greenhouse gasses that pollute the environment.
Moreover, technology exposes as well as encouraging violence. The terrorist activities that take place in the various parts of the world get to be fed into the social media through avenues like Facebook, WhatsApp, twitter, as well as other means (Bolton et al., 2013). The information tends to encourage the terrorists to work harder in killing most of the innocent people.
It is a means of showing their achievements and getting to expose the weakness of many governments as well as peace-oriented organizations in fighting vices like terrorism (Sloss, 2015). As a result, such information gives the citizens emotional stress because it creates a form of fear that causes unrest of a person’s mind.
Technology causes a constant distraction. When a person concentrates on the device, they lose focus on what goes on around them and tend miss a lot. If a person spends most of the time looking at the gadget, they disregard the people around them (Sloss, 2015). In that connection, there is a rise in the cases of injuries the person undergoes as they walk while scrolling their mobile phones.
Additionally, studies show that people get addicted to technology in various ways. For example, when the mobile phones get lost, people obsessed with using them face a lot of mental unrest, developing various feelings and stress that sometimes cause them to lose morale in undertaking other tasks (Szklo-Coxe, Young, Peppard, Finn, & Benca, 2010). As a result, most of the other duties entrusted to them not meet the requirements as expected because they tend to give them less attention.
In addition, it is evident that technology contributes in certain ways on the rise in road accidents. Most applications that exist in the mobile gadgets leads people to use them while driving (Szklo-Coxe, Young, Peppard, Finn, & Benca, 2010). In most cases, a person operates a certain application, for example, replying a text message while driving and ends up causing an accident, which claims the lives of various individuals.
Though the various governments enforce regulations to minimize the accidents that take place on the roads, technology is still responsible for some of the accidents, because it contributes to most instances through the addiction people develop in operating the electronic gadgets while driving.
Finally, technology contributes greatly to the shortening of the attention span among people. Research shows that the use of social media led to the reduction of the attention span from twelve minutes to five minutes (Szklo-Coxe, Young, Peppard, Finn, & Benca, 2010). Based on research, people who spend most of their time online, for as long as 5 hours, undergo trouble remembering the names of people, the pots on the stove, and other common occasions like their birthdays.
Therefore, based on research, the negative impacts of technology have a wide scope of coverage. The negative effects mentioned above show that as long as there exist significant benefits associated with technology on people’s lives, there exists a wide range of negative effects on the lives of the various people
Conclusion
In conclusion, the interaction of the people with the technology led to a wide range of both positive and adverse effects. In particular, it is evident that technological advancements influenced the various spheres of lives of people like education, health, agriculture, and social arena. In this regard, mobile technology had a huge impact on the transfer of information in the society causing dynamics in the social interactions. The changes in technology enabled the health sector to boost the quality of medicine and drugs thereby saving the lives of the people. Furthermore, technology led to the development of new crop varieties and this boosted food security in various parts of the world.
Reflections
First Reflection
This involves an instance in which I benefited from the positive effects of technology. In particular, I attended lessons in classes where the reading involved the use of electronic books. The teaching of various concepts involved the use of PowerPoint presentations, whereby, the tutor could use slides to present the information, hence enabling me to visualize the concepts clearly.
Second Reflection
This involved facing a disadvantage of technological advancement. At the beginning of the semester, I used to listen to music through the headphones, so as not to disturb the rest of the students. As a result, I developed a hearing impairment that disturbed me for quite some time, until I resorted to visiting a physician. Therefore, I can attest to the negative impact of the technology on health.
Third Reflection
This entails the use of a laptop for reading the notes sent by the tutor to the class email. Due to spending a long time staring at the screen of the laptop, I developed regular instances of blurred vision, caused by the light on the screen of the laptop. As a result, an optician recommended that I use spectacles to improve my vision. Based on such experience, I am the best-informed person to confirm the effects of technology on eyesight.
Fourth Reflection
At the beginning of the semester, the professor gave assignments for us to handle at home. The procedure for submission of the assignment was through an online submission portal. However, after finishing the assignment, the network was not reliable enough, and I got bored in the process because it took long for me to deliver the assignment. Therefore, it is true that technology can lead to a further layer of stress.
Fifth Reflection
This entails the positive effects of technology on the lives of people. I was able to store information in flash disks, like my assignments and the notes that I used in my studies. Therefore, technology made it easy for me to access the information at any time, and store it for future reference. Hence, technology is of great benefit in the storage of the information.
