Net Neutrality
Do you support the idea that internet traffic should flow freely?
Yes, I do support the idea that internet traffic must flow independently. Blocking a website for any unwanted content, or explosive content is a different thing while having the power to control traffic flow of websites is a different matter altogether. The idea that ISPs can block access to some websites, slow down speeds and give preferential access to some is a scary one. It could be the start of a traffic war with big internet companies partnering with ISPs (Internet Service Providers) and creating different business models like prevalent today in the mobile phone industry. It is something like my mobile service provider not allowing personal calls to go through but if any call made to a retail or commercial company gets through easily. The idea of net neutrality is so crucial that even US President Barack Obama intervened and directed FCC (Federal Communications Commission) to uphold the principle of net neutrality by creating strongest possible rules. The move by ISPs to create a chargeable model based on bandwidth consumption will move the power into wrong hands. The Internet, because of its free nature, has fueled innovation. It is a place to learn, to get inspired and collaborate. The proposed move by ISPs could sabotage all of this.
Should U.S. Government regulate the internet as a common carrier?
If the government starts to regulate the internet then it would be the end of free speech. The Internet has provided a platform for people to share their thoughts, experiences, and feelings. It has changed how people interact. Internet regulation threatens to curb the internet freedom and put the power into hands of government to monitor and regulate Internet data.
Were you aware of net neutrality controversy?
Yes, I was aware of the net neutrality controversy through various media reports, online petitions being filed and email campaigns. Initially, I came to know of the idea through a website http://youngzine.org, later I got an understanding as I read more material on the issue.
