Differences between computer security and information security.
- Computer security concerns physical assets and people using it while information security concerns with information found in computer systems.
- Information security is a broad field while computer security is narrowly based on the security of computers.
Information security is defined as the processes and methodologies that are developed and implemented to protect print, electronic and any other form of confidential and private information or data from use, misuse, disclosure, modification, destruction or unauthorized access. Thus, information security is concerned with the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information available in various forms such as electronic and print among others.
Computer security, on the other hand, is a subset of information security in that it is concerned with the physical assets of the computer and associated parts. Computer security is different from information security in that it is limited to the hardware where information is stored, in addition to people and mechanisms. Information security is not limited to the hardware components where information is transmitted and stored, but it only concerns the ownership and rights accorded to them.
Information security encompasses the mechanisms of safely storing the information in computer systems without discrimination. It goes beyond the purposes of storage only and extends to means by which it is circulated and the storage places.
Computer security is a broad term that describes the measures for protecting computer systems. Computer systems comprise of the computer environments made up of people, computer hardware, software’s, and other associated media. Computer security defines the protocols for the protection of all this components.
Information is included as among the most significant assets to be protected in their diverse storage forms and mediums. It can be stored digitally or in conventional channels such as analog systems.
