The academia community around the world consists mostly of people who are young and frankly looking good and performing well physically is very important to them. With the rising case in the use of performance, enhancing drugs by athletes all over the world members of the academia community find themselves under constant temptation to partake in the performance enhancing drugs. Athletes who take performance-enhancing drugs perform extremely better than their counterparts who do not. This has a pull factor on the academia community whose majority studies have shown are sports enthusiasts. With the hope of performing as well or even better than their ideal athlete members of the academia community tend to follow suit in partaking of the performance enhancing substances (Rogers, p.41). Social pressure from parents and friends is also playing part in members of the academia community following suit of their predecessors bin professional sports. With the constant pressure to perform well and not let one’s team down members of the academia community find themselves, necessitated by circumstances, to take performance-enhancing drugs and perform as well as professional athletes that do the same.
For most members of the academia community their elf worth and self-esteem is based on how ideal their physical appearance is based on the perceptions and subjectivity of the society. With rising numbers of professional bodybuilders and fitness, athletes openly admitting to using performance enhancing drugs and supplements members of the academia community find themselves more tempted than ever before to try these drugs out. Some professional bodybuilders even go as far as to advertise these performance enhancing drugs and supplements (Healey, p.132). This has tremendous psychological effects on the academia communities whose members idolize these athletes and hold them in the highest of esteem. Endorsement of these performance-enhancing drugs by professional bodybuilders and fitness models has gone a long way in recruiting members of the academia community into the gang that uses these substances. His endorsement has nullified all the prejudices and speculation previously held by society in relation to the use of these substances and somehow the academia community has received the green light with regard to the use of these substances.
Increased use of performance enhancing drugs in sports and the resultant increase in the use of the same drugs by the academia community has subjected the latter to the fatal side effects of these performance-enhancing drugs. Now more than ever young members of the society and mostly academicians are developing medical conditions related to use of performance enhancing drugs. These conditions range from cardiovascular complications to heart failure and brain anomalies (Healey, p.103). Reports of these and many more complications are on the rise in the academia community and this rise can be attributed to this new habit of members of the academia community taking performance enhancing drugs just like the athlete they idolize do.
The financial and social success associated with the sports fraternity and the world of professional athletes has great psychological effects as far as the academia community is concerned. Members of the academia community are greatly impressed by the financial status of athletes and the social status they have acquired, respect, and admiration. Members of the academia community find themselves more and more desiring to be like members of the sports fraternity (Rogers, p.58). Thus, increase in the use of performance enhancing drugs by athletes would be very welcome and even emulated by members of the academia community.
