Introduction
The book is important to the people with an interest in homeland security of the United States of America. It is because of how the book author has developed the theme or the purpose of the book. Unlike many books published many years ago, the book is current having been published in the year 2011. It one of the greatest book in the market concerning the subject of the homeland security. The book TERRORISM HOMELAND SECURITY is the 7th edition of the publications, and it was published in the year 2011 being the latest in that series. It was written for the purpose of creating awareness about the terrorism basing the argument on American context. The author of the book is Jonathan White. He succeeded in providing theoretical about terrorism context of America. Also, White provides a conceptual framework in his book which is important to understanding the functioning of the book. There are many ways in which the book has achieved its purposes. It explains the operation of the terrorism by combining the broad coverage of the terrorism facts and issues not forgetting many sophisticated theories concerning terrorism developed by renowned terrorist analysts in the world. It focuses on the international and the homeland terrorism and also touches on fundamental trends concerning terrorism. The author of the book is a specialist in terrorism.
The reason for complementing that Jonathan White is an expert in the field is that different role in various bodies that deals with homeland security. To begin, today he a professor at Meijer Fredrick Honors College of Grand Valley State University. He is the head of the interdisciplinary studies in the university. It is the department of the university that teaches the issues concerning security and terrorism assisted by the department of criminal research. Also, it was one of the founding directors of GVSU School of the penal justice, one of the leading school dealing with the security issues in the country. He has participated in different activities concerning safety in the country the most recent one being summoning to the State and local Anti-terrorism Training. It is the government body development after the terrorist attack of 9/11 (White, 2011). It conducts concerning military training on issues like counterterrorism and military forces education. He was summoned by the Bureau of Justice to the organization to give assistance concerning the terrorism issues. These experiences give White the power to write an educative book concerning homeland security.
Reading the book was a positive experience due to significant issues explained in the book. It is very encouraging understanding how the terrorism works just from a single work due to its extensive coverage. This book appears to be well-written due to the writing style, and it is also informative. It can show chapter of the terrorism and homeland security topic, and a must read for everyone due to the growth of terrorism activities in the United States and the entire world (White, 2011). After reading the topic, I understood the idea of terrorism as explained in the introduction to the text. The informative I find in the book that can informative is about the domestic and international agencies, the functioning and facts concerning FBI. In my opinion, I locate the book treasured and informative. The author succeeded in attaining the purpose of the book.
Discussion
Among the reasons why I can classify the book as classic White has been able to show the whole picture of the book. Terrorism and the homeland have been widely discussed in the book by use of different perspective. After reading the book, I was able to understand the whole picture and what the security and homeland measures of dealing with the subject. The book explains the organization that is responsible for the homeland security by describing their functioning and changes in the changing presidential tenures in the country. The main parts and the most important is the discussion of the variations in the presidential administrations under different mandates and how they have contributed to the issue of the homeland security. The treatment of the topic is extensive due to the fact in which the subject has been studied. The problem of the homeland security has been well explained in the book. The book can equip one with information that will enable him/ her apply to maintain the safety of the different situation. In other words, the understanding of the text applies to real life experience due to the use of different
The plotting of the ideas in the book have made the topic under study fascinating and encouraged the reader to read even more. The ideas are developed in a successive manner where reading the first chapter will encourage to keep reading. The first chapters talk about the background of homeland security with the successive chapters explaining the development of the section until the last chapter. This order is important to the reader because he will not be bored in the course of reading because there will be a purpose of reading the next chapter to complete the ideas. The book is important to me a student studying homeland security because it helps me understand the organizations and bodies dealing with homeland security.
The book is the best book to homeland and terrorism issues because it attempts to unveil hidden ideas. It a book on its own because it addresses concepts about security which no other texts has ever dared to touch. Few books have explained the working of FBI. The other security books give skeleton information about the subject. It goes to connect different concepts to terrorism, for instance, it provides a broad information about the connection between religion and terrorism. The failure of Homeland Security question is among the hidden issues the book tries to explain indirectly. In this relation, there is valuable information about the subjects studied in the book which includes a well-analyzed history about which is in a form of background study in the text. The other relevant facts revealed include the new trends in the national and international terrorism under the section of nationalistic and ethnic international terrorism. The information in the book is not limited to domestic terrorism concerning the context of homeland security. However, although the book has succeeded in explaining many of the facts relating to the topic, there are some of the information that White ought to have included (White, 2011). After explaining the history of the terrorism and the today’s situation, one would expect to get the information about the future of terrorism and homeland security based on the current situation. Again, the book would be better if larger of its information was based on case studies and scenarios.
The book’s author believes that department of homeland security has failed in matters relating to the homeland security. It is the reason he offers a solution to the current problem by presenting the real life situation at the end of every chapter. The subject matter of the book is organized in a manner which makes the book interesting. The ideas are chronologically developed in the text. They are arranged in a way such that the book starts with a background to what is happening today. They subject matter is organized retrospectively such that the text is arranged such each concept and organizations are explained which is followed by an explanation of the operation and concept application. In this case, the reader will have a great understanding application of the concepts of the subject of the book. The author held my interest throughout the text of use of suspense technique. He would develop the idea such that I was able forced to see the continuation of the concept or the idea. In summary, the work was chronologically arranged such that it was easy to follow the subject.
There are various scenes in the text that I enjoyed most. They include the organization and financing of the terrorism and the roots of modern terrorism. They were interesting because it presented information which is rare and hard to find it in any other media. There are few improvements I would make in the book. The first change would have been changing the font of the hard copy of the book since it is hard to read. I would make it a little bigger for easy reading.
The quality of the book was good on different based on various issues expect few which id did not do to the expectation. Regarding coherence, the book had a good flow of ideas and thus the clarity was high. The book was so good and would encourage one to keep reading. The originality was of high quality since the text was mainly written out experience and most of the work on each chapter on real life situation case. However, the book did not meet the expected experience in term of completeness, because of expected contents which are not present.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the book was well written and one of the best books in the store. It can be used as a reference book in matters relating to the terrorism ad organization bodies dealing with homeland security. The book affected me by installing different concepts about terrorism in me. I understand issues relating to homeland and terrorism differently. The book has been able to change the way I usually I was thinking. I learned of the new concepts and theories and subjects which are important since I can easily apply them in real life situation. It is a must-read book for everybody and thus I would highly recommend my friend to read it by explaining to them the benefits I attained from the book. Since my career is in the organization of the dealing with homeland security, the book is so important to me because I can use the information I have attained in my field. Also, I will use the information from the book on the development of research I am planning to carry.
