The months of November and December are two months of the year when world starts to look a lot different from its preceding days. One month follows the next and they both lie toward the end of the year when the weather is cold and the enviroment has gone through some drastic changes. The trees have either changed color to beautiful shades of yellow and orange or they have simply shed there green leaves to reviel the naked skin of the bark beneath. Yes it's a exciting time for everyone especially because it means that the two biggest holidays of the year are right around the corner. Thanksgiving and Christmas are arguably the best holidays of the year and although they are different they also have their similarities.
These holidays both are a time for family members from all over to get together and see eachother. This gives families that have migrated to different parts of the country a perfect reason to get together and tell stories of the year that has past and talk about the years of many that have past before. Both holidays are also a great way for the self proclaimed chefs of the family to put on their cooking aprons and try to make the best dish possible to bring to the occasion!
Now although cooking is a similarity to both these holidays, what is served traditionally is also different. For Thanksgiving the delicious turkey is always the main dish and a fan favorite. Turkeys nowadays can be either baked or fried and has a unique smell that can be recognized as soon as you open the front door. Christmas usually has very similar side dishes but the turkey is left out. A country ham or even lamb with mint sauce are the usual main dishes seen at a christmas dinner.
The anticipation for a full stomach and the anticipation for opening christmas gifts are the other big differences of the two holidays. While one is there to fill the stomach, the other is there to fill the house. Gifts are always the favorite part for everyone, especially the children. They get to rip open gifts they have been staring at for days and weeks and they can't wait to see what santa brought!
These two holidays will always be the favorite of most and no two holidays are mentioned more people are asked for their favorite. As long as families are around, these two holidays will be around and I don't see either of them going anywhere for a long time. Happy Holidays!
