The issue of what art is has long been contested. However, in the art market, there are frequent exhibitions and biennales that define the understanding of global art. Some of the most important of these have been Documenta, the Istanbul Biennial, the Berlin 2008 Biennale, ArtBasel Miami
The people being interviewed do not necessarily think that there is only one art world right now. Due to the lack of a set reference, they propose the notion of many art worlds, a multi-polar art scene, with many power players. In this sense, there are some that propose one not only generalize in terms of space, but of time as well.
The main problem with globalization is that it allows rich people to travel the world and obtain many important pieces of art, which make them very powerful. However, they mainly travel to the big, important art shows and biennials. Therefore, a way to maintain power of the local would be to visit the art markets in smaller cities, such as Bogota. Furthermore, it is important to be personally satisfied with one-s collection, without necessarily being tied down to what most people are praising in the general art worlds.
In this sense, there is an important market for two different types of discoveries: the historical one and the classical one. Nicolas Bourriaud describes these as follows: “historical added value, as in "I am rediscovering Léon Ferrari and I'm the first person to show him"; and "classic" added value, i.e. showing some very artist”. In this sense, it is a very exciting time to be a young artist, and local markets may be powered by seeing emerging talent in an exciting way.
