The Beautiful Soul of Don Damian reveals the theme of the fact that people are not always what they claim to be or appear. Bosch explains the story in the setting and the theme that appears relevant to many people’s lives. The first sequel reveals the true intentions and feelings of the people around Don Damian’s life. The sequel reveals to Don Damian about how ugly his soul had been in the past and feels the intention to change his ways (Bosch, 3). The second sequel would have the theme of changing the old ways upon the revelation of the immoral behavior and how it attracts bad people.
On the second week, Don Damian is discharged from hospital and goes home where his family and friends had prepared a ‘welcome back home’ party. The wife and the step-daughter were at the forefront in preparing for the party which appeared luxurious and extravagant. Don Damian could see through their lies and pretense after the revelation in the hospital. He decides to change his behavior and ensure that people would not only be his friends for the purpose of his wealth. He decided to deal with his wife and step-daughter by making sure they would not gain the money and wealth as they intended. Don Damian had already come up with a plan to deal with his wealth and ensure he changed his life.
Upon arrival at the house, the housemaid runs towards him saying “Oh! Master! Welcome home. Finally, my prayers have been answered. Your beautiful soul gets to live again.” Don Damian believed that the housemaid was honest and gave her a hug reassuring her that he would never leave this world without accomplishing many things. “I am not leaving soon. I have to complete my mission here on earth,” said Don Damian. He got into the house and people cheered and greeted him at the door wish him a full recovery. For some of them, Don Damian could really tell if they were genuinely concerned, but he just went along with it.
Later, Don Damian was given a chance to address the people, and he took it as an opportunity to make known his plans for the future. He appreciated them and said, “My experience serves as an eye-opener for the many things in life that matter.” The words may have been vague, but like a sharp-pointed sword, they went deep into some of his friends and family members. He continued, “People may not seem as they are, and my near death experience opened up many secret doors.” Not many understood the true meaning of the speech that he gave, but he made sure he gave a warning.
The climax of the party was when Don Damian announced some changes in his business and family arrangements. He announced, “And now to some business matters, I have decided to dedicate ten percent of the company profits to charity. The company also will undergo various changes in the management which will require the acquisition of new members of the board.” Don Damian meant that he would no longer involve family ties in the running of the business. Therefore, the wife and the step-daughter would no longer be part of the company. He would let them seek other means of earning a living by working and not depending on his wealth. The sequel comes to an end with his exit from the party room, leaving the guests in silence as they contemplate his words.
