Immigration is a concept that is affecting a great number of people today and the reasons for this are various. Some people immigrate because they expect a better life, while others go for work, family or are forced away from their homes due to wars and other tragedies. The concept of immigration causes opposed reaction of people because some people are against it while the other approve of it. Generally, people do leave their homes and go to other countries if they have good lives. The usual reason of immigration is the fact that people are seeking better future for themselves and for their children.
Immigration includes moving to the country different that the country of one’s origin and it is best if immigrants could become legal citizens of that country. They wish to work and live there and to become assimilated into the new culture. This is the right thing to do because immigrants have to accept the rules, customs and culture of the country they are going to live in. It is best to go to the countries that foster diversity, such as the U.S. Some people are immigrants for a specific amount of time which happens when they get hired for a seasonal job. Migration occurs for numerous reasons, and not all of them are bad because people can become immigrants because of love and marriage or a better job opportunity. Diverse societies are the richest societies because their culture is what makes them unique.
There are different kinds of immigration: “relocation are often imagined as permanent, thus differentiating immigrants from groups such as temporary migrant laborers, tourists, business visitors, and international students” (Luibheid 125). It is important to understand the difference because not all of the people who are residing in a foreign country are immigrants. Some of them are temporarily there, which is the main difference between temporary migrants and immigrants.
Immigrants abandon the countries of their origin for many reasons, but most common is reason is economic. They want to improve the quality of their life by moving to a place where they can be more prosperous. People who are tourists or commuters are not immigrants and they do not have citizenship. Most immigrants go to UAE and Qatar although The U.S. is the popular destination as well. “Both emigration and immigration involve individual choice, and to make mobile people visible primarily as problems for the state to manage” (Luibheid 125). Emigration is the problem because the country loses educated work force and this is called the brain drain. On the other hand, the country which accepts these migrants gains because they get highly skilled laborers.
The immigration has changed since it first began to happen because the law and policies have changed. “Between the 1770s and the 1870s, immigration was practically unrestricted in most receiving countries, and some of them lacked the capacity to control immigration” (Meyers 124). Much has changed since then because the immigration policies have become very strict and people who get citizenship have to go through extensive procedures. There is nothing wrong with the concept of immigration because country borders have been made by humans and there should be no artificial boundaries between the countries. However, this would be possible only in an ideal world, and that is why immigration policy exists and is strict.
