Part II: Conflict Management Plan
- Problem Solving
- Avoiding Authoritative commands
- Super-ordinate Goals
- Compromise
- Collaboration
- Accommodation
- Competing
Each strategy has advantages as well as disadvantages, which are mentioned below.
The consideration of the strategy in order to resolve the conflict between James and David depend on the collaboration. Collaboration helps the individuals to with one another in order to achieve a common goal (Anyanwu, 2009).They should sit together for discussing the situation in detail, and should adopt cooperative as well as assertive attitude. Collaboration and cooperation can pave the way to the effective resolution of the conflict (Hellriegel & Slocum, 2010). However, the presence of supervisor is necessary so that they can guide them and observe them during the meeting. Both James and David should be given the chance and opportunity to describe the reason of adopting such attitude towards each other. It is quite possible that the conflict and negative behavior of James and David is because of the misunderstanding or improper communication in the past. As a matter of fact the solution of such situations is not difficult. Once they are given the opportunity to talk, discuss the facts and express themselves, they will solve the problem. However, in order to work with each other they have to formulate an effective plan in order to accomplish the task in a proper manner. David and James are hardworking and great employees, once they succeeded in resolving their conflicts, they will start work on the project but this time they will cooperate and coordinate with each other as their goal is common. They will assist each other and try to understand each other so that effective accomplishment of the project can be ensured, and conflicts can be avoided to the maximum possible extent.
If they do not agree to solve the matter and end the conflict then compromise is the alternative strategy. The supervisors will interfere and help them in making a decision by sacrificing for each other, which will help in the prevention of conflict, and also encourage them to work together and respect each other. Though the conflict will be ended, yet the work will not be effective and innovative due to lack of trust and openness between them.
The possible challenges, however, include difficulty in finding the solution of problem because of the negative behavior of James and David, and their reluctance in mentioning the exact reason of the conflict. When the reason of problem is not known, it becomes difficult to find the solution. It will waste the time, prolong the discussion, and decreases the chances for finding the solution of problems. It is also possible that one individual is ready for the resolution of the conflict, but other is not ready, this situation is also very challenging because it becomes difficult for the management or supervisor to find the solution. In order to avoid such issues, the management should assure that the jobs of individuals are secure and resolution is required. The management may have to face road blocks, but they can be easily overcome if the management solves them logically by keeping their wits.
