In The Devil Wears Prada, Miranda Priestly plays the role of an overbearing, snide, and ruthlessly judgmental fashion editor who emotionally and psychologically abuses her supporting staff. Her arrogance, pride, and condescension towards those whom she regards as inferior to her class and taste is indicative of someone who harbors a terrorizing and unprocessed shadow side. Individuals who behave as Miranda Priestly does in the film often suppress their hatred and disgust towards other human beings in order to feign appearances and engage in necessary social interaction. However, if they could, they would remain at a safe distance from others for whom they hold either disdain or indifference. These are aspects of a devil-like figure, one who elevates him or herself above the needs and concerns of others, who demands immediate attention and gratification, and who expects others to constantly be at their beck and call. Miranda absolutely qualifies as a kind of devil and a menace who tempts Andy to abandon her authenticity in exchange for fitting in, being socially accepted, and passing off as fashion savvy, which is a trait Andy originally lacks.
In a sense, Miranda does tempt Andy to forfeit her soul and offer it up in order to meet socially constructed standards and conventions of achieved beauty and femininity. Her unyielding demeanor challenges Andy to compromise her relationships with others and sacrifice her integrity in order to secure her position as Miranda’s assistant. To cast Miranda as a devil is an accurate assessment, insofar as she creates a form of bondage that restricts and confines Andy’s authentic essence and nearly crushes her spirit. The desire to control others is a demonic quality, and it is one that Miranda displays consistently throughout the film. It is also accurate to suggest that Andy is not only susceptible to temptation, but falls victim to it as she attempts to break the glass ceiling in her own way and shatter the barriers around her professional advancement. Andy commits the sin of idolizing Miranda and the magazine, placing them above her original priority which was to pursue her career as a writer. She commits the sin of false testimony, or lying, by pretending to be someone or something that she is not. In attempting to assimilate to the fashion and culture at Runway, Andy must lie to herself about her true motivations and aspirations, and in so doing, she concedes a vital aspect of her soul and her integrity.
