The distinction between gold plated and gold clad can be confusing. If an item is sold as having any amount of gold the quality of that gold is regulated by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. 24 karat gold is 99.9 percent pure. By FTC standards, only 24 karat gold may be called gold without additional reference, abbreviation or qualification. However the processes used for how the gold is applied and how thick it is not always regulated. Because of this, it may not be easy to figure out how valuable the item is. To add to the confusion, both items may have similar values because the essential difference is one of regulation.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission regulates how the word "plated" and it does not regulate the word "clad." There are industry standards for the creation of clad materials but it is up to the consumer to verify how thick the layer of gold is and if the process was done to their standards and specifications. An item marketed as clad has only to be covered with that material. The FTC standard for gold plate or gold plated is a thickness that assures reasonable durability and requires 1/20th of the total weight for gold plate. Because the FTC does not regulate the term "clad" an item marketed as gold clad only has to be it covered in 24 karat gold in any thickness and it does not have to meet the higher standard set to be called plated.
