Everybody has a dream. Some dreams are little, like, buying shoes or a getting a cat, and some dreams are big, like becoming a president. Some people take step to step in order to achieve their dreams. Other people prefer to sit and dream making nothing to achieve their wish. It is better for them to wait for luck or mystery. Moreover, this is uncertainty and hope that make a dream “dream”. So for many people dream is something they will not even try to achieve since they find it better only to believe in it and hope for its accomplishment.
My dream is neither big nor little. I remember my Mom reading “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupery to me. It is a story about a little boy from another planet. He was telling about his life to a pilot whom he had met in a desert. This is a story that never leaves anyone indifferent. When I got older I decided to read another book written by Antoine de Saint-Exupery – “Wind, sand and stars”. It is an autobiographical book where Exupery tells us how he has become an aviator, about his routes across Sahara and Andes. He describes the beauty of our earth that can be seen only from a bird’s-eye view. However, Exupery does not only tell about the beauty, he tells the whole truth about this job – about numerous deaths, missing aviators and the danger that follows all the pilots. Yet Exupery filled the book with his love towards what he is doing, he makes the reader believe that the beauty of this profession is more important than its insecurity.
This is when I have decided what I want to do. This is when I have realized what the real dream of my life is. This is when I have understood that I want to become a pilot.
Many books were read, many films were watched. My desire to become a pilot was growing bigger and bigger with every single day. At first, I did not even think about turning this dream real. I could spend hours thinking and imagining how it could have been, I could see myself flying in the sky, looking at the stars and operating the plane, struggling to remain alive in this battle between technical progress and nature.
One time, surfing in the internet, I saw a phrase that said that most of the people had a dream that could have come true by the end of a week but they made it a dream of their whole life. For me this dream was something ephemeral, unattainable. Then I imagined myself doing something I do not like for my whole life, wasting day after day working on a job I hate. Of course, I could not achieve this goal in a week, it definitely took me more time, but I did all I could in order to prove myself, my family and all the other people that everyone should fight for their dreams.
There were many things that kept me from becoming a pilot. All of them did not seem to be too hard to overcome. For my whole life I have always thought there is nothing impossible, I have always known that the will, desire and efforts can conquer all the problems and obstacles.
However, the main complication was that I did not know English. I am a foreigner; I was born in _________ (country of birth). At school we did learn English but I did not know it well, I only knew its basics. I was aware of the fact that if I did not learn English I would never become a pilot and the dream would only remain “the dream of my life”.
My parents supported me in my choice and they did their best to help me. But I remained face to face with this problem as my parents could not learn English instead of me; they were helpless with this issue. English is the language of the whole world so I realized I need to know it not only in order to achieve my dream. Many people in Europe, Asia and other continents use English in their daily lives. America, England and other English-speaking countries invite students from all over the world to study in their universities and colleges; they offer grants and organize different meeting and conferences about cultural exchange and leadership trainings. So, even if I did not become a pilot I still would have needed to know English just for myself, in order to feel free and not to have any troubles in communicating with different people. All in all, knowing English has many advantages and one can benefit greatly from speaking English fluently.
At first, I tried to learn English by myself. I tried to watch movies in English and tried to read English books but I failed. I did not know English well enough to do all of that. A friend of mine was fluent in English because she lived in America for a year so I decided to turn for help to her. She told me that before leaving for the USA she learned English at ELS and advised me to give it a try. I studied very hard and I always did my best trying to learn English. In a while I found myself understanding English while watching movies, reading books and listening to different interviews. It took me a little longer to start to speak English but finally I managed to do that as well. I tried to communicate with students from other countries who were also trying to learn English. We helped each other to improve our skills.
Now, years have passed and I speak English fluently. I have made everything possible and I have proven to me and my family that dreams are meant to come true, we just need to put a little effort in it. I have become a pilot and I will fly soon. Nothing stands on your way of achieving the dream. Every person can make so much in order to approach to their dream and every little step forward makes them closer to it. I urge everybody to believe in their dreams and make everything possible to achieve it. I call everyone upon to fight for their desires. There is nothing impossible in our world, you just need to believe and do your best. Every dream exists for us to make them true so do not lose your chance to become happy.
