Introduction
The present study discusses the consequences of alcohol consumption on the human body. In particular, the investigation focuses on the influence of the intoxicant on participants in the event industry. An event refers to any public gathering of people for a given purpose. The sector includes sports, meetings, and cultural activities. In relation to the events industry, the study specifically examines alcohol consumption among athletes.
Effect on the Physiological Processes
Alcohol consumption nullifies the results of practice. Its harmful effects reduce the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) (Firth, n. d). It, therefore, reduces the main source of energy for athletes. It creates sleeping disorders that interfere with muscle growth. In addition, it stops the liver from releasing the testosterone hormone that promotes muscle growth. The consumption of alcohol interferes with the aerobic process by slowing down the respiratory function. It also affects the control of body temperature and creates dehydration (The Independent, 2005). Dehydration can lead to shock, and seizures. Alcohol reduces a person’s reaction time and decreases body balance. In the long term, alcohol affects the cardiovascular function and impairs the body’s ability to absorb essential nutrients. It can also alter the hormonal balance and cause cardiac arrests.
The Top Ten Reasons That Discourage Serving Alcohol at Sports Events
First, alcohol increases the rate of dehydration and may lead athletes to shock. Secondly, it reduces energy by inhibiting the production of ATP. Thirdly, it reduces the balance in the body and leads to poor performance. Fourthly, serving alcohol to the fans increases their chances of becoming disorderly during the sporting event. The fifth reason is that it increases the build-up of lactic acid in the muscles and increases the risk of sudden muscle cramps among the athletes. The sixth point is that it reduces response time and increases the potential for traffic crashes as fans drive home after the event. The seventh disadvantage of serving alcohol within the stadium is that minors can easily gain access to the alcoholic beverages due to the lax alcohol-control policies. The eighth reason is that intoxicated fans may sustain serious injuries in case of a stampede in the stadium. The ninth factor is that the intoxicated fans often experience legal problems because of their excessive drinking (Cosgrove-Mather, 2002). Finally, the regular consumption of alcohol during sports may lead some fans to alcohol addiction and cause teenagers to drop out of school.
Conclusion
Alcohol consumption in the event industry results into many disadvantages especially if not well managed. Alcohol affects the biological processes of the body such as the hormonal production, respiration, and temperature regulation. As a result, alcohol reduces performance among the athletes. The unregulated serving of alcohol to the fans increases the incidences of disorderly behavior such as violence and the damage of property. Sports organizers, therefore, should prevent the serving of alcohol in sporting events due to its many disadvantages.
