Bullying is a topic that has been well-discussed and debated about in the previous years by various stakeholders and concerned organizations. Before, when bullying was mainly concentrated and common in schools, it has later on expanded over the Internet and the social media after modern technology has grown and produced more gadgets that enabled everyone to communicate more and often on a wider scale wherever they are. Apart from the scale, bullying was also found to have affected and continue to affect people from all age groups, whether they be students or professionals, or people from different social status. Anyone can become a target, and the repercussions are immeasurable. With the number of victims continuing to increase, the severity of the issue has caught the attention of the government, various organizations, and many concerned individuals. This has resulted in the many programs and activities that promote anti-bullying, mostly in schools and online. Despite the numerous information disseminated regarding the effects of bullying, the issue still persists and many people, both young and old continue to get victimized. This emphasizes the importance of having more campaigns that would downgrade the incidences of bullying.
While there are many negative effects directly linked to bullying, several good things also come out of it. For instance, the experience can help build a stronger character as people who have experienced, either being bullied or bullying someone, understand the fact that people can be mean and evil enough to destroy someone. The experience can be painful and can scar someone for life, but when taken positively, people can also grow stronger from it. After all, experience is the best teacher in life, and whatever learning one gets from it, when applied properly, would make life easier and so much better. Also, with this life learning, people can be more cautious about others, that instead of trusting people easily and completely, they can be more selective about who they would get involved with and who to place their trust to. However, one should be more careful about being cautious as when taken too far, it may cause paranoia and the complete ability to trust people altogether.
While it can develop someone’s character, when taken negatively, it can also cause someone to lose self-esteem and sink to a level where inferiority complex would completely take over one’s personality. This is one of the most common consequences of bullying to someone, as
bullying is about belittling someone and robbing someone of his/her self-worth and confidence. As a result, the person could either end up separating him/herself from the society or become self-destructive because s/he finds him/herself less important and unlovable. Infinite sadness is another consequence of bullying, and in some cases, like being self-destructive, it could lead to depression and eventually, suicide. There have been numerous suicide cases that resulted from bullying, and this is not exclusive to young people but also includes adults.
Bullying has a very different way of destroying someone, but some good things could also come out of the experience. Like any other experience in life that one goes through, it all depends on how the person would take it, either in a positive or negative manner. However, this may only apply to people who are old enough to understand the difference, and have the means and will to choose the good things that could be derived from such experience. Either way, it is a social issue that has to be addressed, and nothing can be more powerful than educating people about its negative effects in order to decrease the instances.
