Harmony in music is like an eloquence in speech: it grants pithiness and smoothness in a music flow. Harmony should guarantee that all the tones, notes, and chords are relevant and match each other in a musical piece. None of the sounds should be the odd one out, otherwise, it would not be appealing to the ear of the audience. Harmony refers to the melodic line as it determines the vertical or horizontal aspect of music. Upon this definition, harmony is tightly connected with melody. The simultaneous combination of tones and sounds can be well organized in rhythm, however once they do not form a pure melody, the music do not have a harmony.
Rhythm is a substantial element in music. It is a pattern of sounds that repeated in a form of beats or repetitive and sounds of musical instruments. Patterns form motif of the song. This what makes a song catchy: it is easy to remember it as human memory likes patterns and the simple motif sticks to the memory. For the analysis was chosen Here I Am by Tom Odell song. From the very beginning of the song, we can hear the patterns of claps in the background. This is one of the main element that forms rhythm of the song as it passes through the whole song. The sounds of the piano repeat the melody twice before the soloist starts singing and afterward it fades. It is repeated in the chorus. Sounds of drums and is gradually added to the music after the piano and we can hear them distinctly from the second couplet, as well as the electro guitar emerges later in the song. Overall, the song has its rhythm that forms laconic melody and in turn, harmony.
