Forest Gump is a 1994 American romantic sit-com which centered on the novel Forest Gump by Winston Groom. The film directed by Robert and starred by Tom, Robin Wright, Gary Sinise and Sally Field. The art of Rhetoric, developed by Aristotle argued that it is the art of persuasion using the skill of ethos, logos and pathos.
In the Film, Forrest has a character that is centered and the film greatly revolves around him. Forrest also has a different style either of conveying the message to his mum Jenny or in church a congregation. The main area of ethos in the film is the workmanship from the refutable filmmakers. Ethos refers to the credibility or reliability of the speaker or writer. It is usually conveyed through character and style of the message and the process through which the speaker handles different views.
The film uses the skill of logos because of the clearness of the message, the logic in the setting and the effectiveness of the supporting evidence. Its effect to the audience is referred to as argument’s logical plea. The Film is clear, and the characters play their roles in a more interesting way. A historical appeal is the main area of logos in the film.
Pathos is usually attached to the emotional appeal. The movie makes the audience not only to respond passionately but also to get the point of view of the writer. This, therefore, implies the imaginative pain that the audience experience. The emotional aspect mostly comes in when Forrest is talking to the dead people. It is emotional though the audience understands the point of view of Forrest. The film and the storytelling that shows an audience emotion is the main area of pathos in the film.
In the film, all-embracing visual effects are employed to include the protagonist into archived film and to create other scenes. An all-inclusive soundtrack is also featured in the footage. Music is used to identify specific periods shown on the screen. Its release made it sell over twelve million of its soundtrack.
In the film, however, the character is a little different from those in the novel. His character is that of an autistic savant, a decent character, who is always true to his word. He also appears to be one who has neither an agenda nor an opinion about anything. He only has and an agenda and opinion regarding his mother and God, Jenny.
The use of visual effects in the film was paramount. Ken Ralston and his group at Industrial were liable for the visual effects in the film. Employing CGI modus Operandi, it was possible to illustrate Gump meeting dead personages while shaking their hands. He was first shot against a blue screen along with reference markers. The voices of the deceased figures, voice doubles were employed, and special effects used to change the mouth their mouth movements for dialogue.
In the political side of view, the film serves a visual textbook of the history of America. It covers the birth of rock and roll, the civil rights movements, the moon landing among others. We also experience the Black Panthers, assassinations attempts, John Lennon. This is the reason why the film is filmed on History Channels.
The film explores on the matter of sex this is brought about by Forrest. Who is a college athlete, and his life began when his mother had sex with a college principal. The first sight of breasts carries him, hence ejaculating in a bathrobe in Jenny’s college roommate. He also does not like girls who taste like cigarettes.
War is expressed in the film where the Lt. Dan transits from a war hawk fighting the Vietcong to wedding a Korean woman, Susan.
The movie brings out the issue of racism, this portrays where Forrest is entitled to a name after the creator of the Klu Klux Klan. Although when schoolmates use the ethnic slur ‘coon,’ Forrest leaves the group to help integrate America’s first school. He is kicked out of the Black Panther Party and then contributes cash to Bubba’s bayou family.
Forrest sings in a church choir and talks of Lt. Dan making harmony with God and also imagines Jenny as a rejuvenated bird. Forest does not do things because they are right but because he is the guiding light of purple. All these instances portray the religious part of the movie.
The social life of an individual should not be based on materialism so much because the love of money leads to destruction. Forrest has the impeccable take on money and quantifiable wealth. There exists a scene whereby Forrest opens a letter specifying his company’s venture in Apple. He goes on and says, “He had me devoted in a certain Fruit Company, so then I got a plea and he says, we do not have to fear about cash anymore”
The concept of helping the needy and the church of God to grow comes out in the movie. Forrest said “Now mama said there’s one so much treasure a man indeed desires, and the rest is just for show off.”He went on to donate huge lumps of cash to Four Square Gospel Church and the Bayou La Bater Medical Center, a religious and scientific organization.
