Without the advent of modern technology to assist in the interpersonal communication of individuals, communication will essentially revert to having the characteristics of communication in the Victorian Age where individuals interact directly or by means of the written word i.e. the letter. These elements of communication are defined as Verbal and Written communication
Verbal communication is defined as the act of conveying a message by the sender; he or she who intends to communicate via the use of mouth to the receiver; the one the message is intended for. Verbal communication is the passing of messages from the sender to the receiver on a face to face basis. It is also defined as a way of conveying information in spoken rather than a written manner.
It involves any interaction that involves the written word. It is also the development of ideas and expression of ideas in writing. Written communication can be used in the communication between individuals, in the form of personal or formal letters, between individuals and organizations i.e. internal and external memos, and, between the populace and governments or publishing houses, newspapers and magazines.
Interpersonal communication is the change of messages between two parties. The process involves the sending and receiving of messages between two people.
Language is the most fundamental aspect of communication since it is the only channel in which messages can be sent and received. Without primary forms of communication, language would evolve to a point where it can accurately describe and convey the message to the sender’s satisfaction. There would be careful consideration before putting words down and even more so when one is describing events, or the general surrounding of a place or the people there. The biggest advantage for using written forms of communication in today's world is that these messages need not be delivered immediately. They can instead be revised and edited several times before the sender transfers it to the receiver such that the content can be shaped to maximum effect.
Business being conducted over long distances would inevitably suffer as the long time it would take before the message is delivered or before a person arrives at some distant office would discourage most from participating in such. There would also be the danger of interception of the message causing the receiver to miss the message and the sender never to receive feedback
With the invention of the telephone and its subsequent dissemination into the world, many people’s personal and social lives improved with the ease of which someone could keep in touch and ask others of the opposite sex out. However without modern devices, sending a letter to someone in order to ask them out often took a long time to organize and execute. Added to the uncertainty of whether or not one may find the other a suitable match, it made a face to face communication important. The benefits of one on one communication were noticed for it made a person carefully consider the other’s suitability as a potential spouse. In our current society, however, long distance relationships are maintained via modern means such as text, e-mail, web chat, social media, Skype, etc. Without these means, long distance relationship could only occur between well off individuals who would be able to meet the cost of traveling long distance on a regular basis.
Conversations between individuals would be invariably longer. Friends usually keep each other up to date about each other through the methods mentioned. Without these means, conversations would be very lengthy especially if the individuals have not seen each other for a long time. It would, therefore, be the cause for the exchange of information, which would invariably take a long time for each of the parties to bring the other up to date. It would cause individuals to strengthen the bonds of their friendship and keep individuals feeling accepted and loved. Conversation is especially important in curbing psychological disorders such as depression. It also lowers the risk of suicides in troubled individuals as these friendships convince them that the hope is not lost.
