Fitzgerald F. Scott is a renowned writer in the world literature. Scott’s works have contributed a lot to the development of literature in the global front. One of his remarkable piece of work is the novel entitled “The Great Gatsby”. First created in 1925, “The Great Gatsby” was republished several times in different languages to suit the needs of the audience. The book’s city of publication is New York in the United States. Fitzgerald Scott himself was an aspired American who was concerned by the civilization activities of the time (Fitzgerald & Bruccol 26). America was the place for racism and discrimination that often resulted to various movements. The story of the novel presents the audience with the exact situation of quixotic obsession and passion for the achievement of freedom among the American races in the early 19s.
Evidently, Scott put focus on certain movements of the time. Specifically, the book is highly attributed to the Jazz age/movement. It creates a portrait and a reflection of how freedom was fought as the American society was working forward to achieving the dream, which is the American Dream. Majority of reviews of “The Great Gatsby” associate the novel with the Jazz style and civilization movement that advocated for freedom and change of the American society. During the time, communication was effectively and easy when done through the elements of Jazz. Social politics and other societal endeavors were in the limelight of the public as issues of racial discrimination among other evil dominated the American society of the time. Scott was greatly inspired with the Jazz call to bring equity and responsibility.
The physical structure of the novel takes another dimension towards the celebrated ancient pieces of the American literature. In its cover page, unique art is appropriately incorporated in reflects of the contents. Images, of naked women, disembodied eyes can be reflected to the irises. Scott’s message was well presented as the struggle societal balance was inevitable during the time of the book’s publication. More so, the organization of events, plot/synopsis reflects the exact situation of human imbalance and societal struggle. Scott uses conflict to develop the story line. All events take place during the summer of 1922. Low class individual – Nick – who takes a salesman job but suddenly begins a romantic relationship with a rich Jordan Baker. There follows a series of conflict development to integrate the lives of poor Nick around the rich.
Scott’s intentions was to show how the lives of the have nots entirely depended on the hands of the haves. With the existence of the extravagant parties, the poor are used as puppets to bring satisfaction to the rich. Similarly, the objective of Jazz revolution at the time was to sing about liberation (Fitzgerald & Pressman 39). The rich, an imagery of the whites partly accepted the movement but with the wrong purpose interpretation. Even though formal organization of Jazz groups occupied enough space to bring bigger influence, their impact was short-lived in the short-run. However, it had great influence in the long-run as the voices of the underserved were heard at last. The much increased call and tension to get the American society freed out of the social evils championed for the change that was achieved.
Scott’s style has a lot of significance. Apart from attracting keeping interest of the audience, it also creates adequate room of an effective communication. This is because; Scott clearly incorporated what interests or touches every individual regardless of their stand among other affiliations. Going with the Jazz tone was to bring the significance of the novel at the time since it was easy to communicate in that manner. In doing so, Scott appropriately presents the themes of the novel to the audience. Here idealism, social degradation and struggle of the low class is evident especially at that time where the US society was far much behind the realization of the “American Dream” Additionally, Scott casts the characters in a unique events developments to signify the identity of the society. Things such as conflicts in relationships, engagements of people from different economical grounds reflect the struggling structure and feature of America in 1920s.
Indeed, Scott’s work deserves to get recognition as the great ever piece of art. This is because the novel leaves a significant legacy especially in the area of world literature. People can easily refer to some period of time synonymous with the book’s plot and synopsis development. In fact, the novel has inspired many poets among other scholars to the extent of reanalyzing it with different perspectives. Also, the quality of “The Great Gatsby” is beyond doubt. Scott’s focus to incorporate common life attributes and specific movements brings the message clear to the audience. It also not only do so to be generation of the time by also to other generations as it highly touches of historical literature and America. Therefore, I highly think that “The Great Gatsby” accomplishes its objectives. The expertise of the author and style that the novel incorporates makes it relevant across generations hence its success.
