Dear Representative Brunner:
I am writing because it has come to my attention that a bill, which I think needs your support, is pending before the House of Representatives. I am referring to House Bill 4398 also known as “The Religious Liberty and Conscience Protection Act.” It is my understanding that the Bill has passed the first reading and is currently being referred to the Committee on Health Policy.
The First Amendment guarantees the right to religion – a right that is not only confined to the freedom to attend mass services at particular days of the week, but a right that transcends rituals and permeates even the mundane tasks of daily living. One’s belief necessarily factors in all facets of decision-making, whether in employment, education and training, and even in participation in health care services, including the purchase of or the provision of health insurance. Thomas Jefferson once said that coercion only “make one half of the world fools, and the other half hypocrites.” People must be able to exercise their right to refuse to render services or accept services, when such services conflict with their conscience. To rule otherwise would infringe not only on freedom of religion, but also on other fundamental human rights as well.
I am, thus, urging you as my representative in the 96th District to support this very important Bill. As a former educator having served as such for three decades, I know you understand the importance of the freedom of expression, such as the freedom to express and put into practice religious beliefs, as one of the pillars of democracy.
Sincerely,
