The medical field have experienced many changes and innovations for a long period. Nursing, in particular, have evolved from being a field for uneducated assistants in the wartime to an essential part of the healthcare system. Today the health care system continues to grow and change, as healthcare equality continues to improve. Today nurses are considered as a vital part of the health care profession who are the leaders when it comes to executing change within the system. They are the conduit between patients and their physicians. They are also the point of reference when patients are seeking or when the physicians are seeking patient information or information on hospital policies. This article assesses the effect of evidence-based practice in nursing and different steps that should be taken to enhance social insurance procurement.
Evidence based practice has been characterized as the utilization of examination discoveries to settle on clinical choices and define models of tending to each patient's case. It combines proven clinical methods and the patient’s values to formulate models of care. Evidence-based practice is aimed to improve the quality of a patient’s life (Stevens, 2013). This practice is in line with the aims of the government to provide quality health care by increasing the degree to which the health services provided to individuals is satisfactory and consistent with the current level of medical knowledge available to practitioners. The need to provide health services consistent with the current level of professional knowledge is achieved through continuous research, and the use of that research culminates in the evidence-based practice applied by nurses in caring for their patients (Stevens, 2013).
According to the article, the aim of the proposed health reforms is to standardize health care provision based on the use of scientifically proven methods to cater for patient needs. The improvement of the evidence-based practice is proliferated by the interest for responsibility and the utilization of safe measures to treat patients while in the meantime giving best quality consideration. In the nursing field, this need includes the satisfaction of the patient with the model of care that was provided to them. The effectiveness of the evidence-based practice relies upon the collaboration of all stakeholders, including the nurses, medical staff, hospital administrators, the federal and state health officers and the government health department.
The practice faces various roadblocks, including the lack of consistent and coherent scientific evidence showing the effectiveness of its use. There is also the inconsistent use by other health care professionals who do not believe in its application or use in the medical field. It is, therefore, a challenge for nurses who wish to apply the practice of the primary physicians are unwilling to include the patients in the decision making of the model of care (Majid et al., 2011). In most cases there is limited time to make the consultations necessary in applying the evidence-based practice model of attention. There is no proof that the use of the evidence-based practice works. This makes it difficult to convince other practitioners to apply it to their care models. It takes up most of the nurse’s time in its application because they have to keep searching for new information about the emerging research and effectiveness of their implementation. This practice has been criticized on the assumption that it allows practitioners to improvise patient care rather that base treatment on methods that have been tested and proven effective or on their nursing skills. It has also been criticized as practiced based as in the practitioners use research from other sources rather than conducting their research. Thus, critics claim that it does not allow for the discovery of new methods rather it is simply a way of proving already done the research. In addition, the nurses lack knowledge or understanding of statistical jargon which impedes their application of the research information. Nurses also cited the lack of knowledge of databases and access to current up to date research. They claimed that they received the research when it was already out of date, this made its application unnecessary and in some cases fatal (Majid et al., 2011).
Some of the roadblocks can be eliminated through the collaboration of medical practitioners in the use of evidence-based practice. There was a need for its incorporation into the curriculum for all practitioners in the medical field; this will allow them to consider it as a mandatory practice that should be considered in every case. It is essential to conduct more research this can be implemented by allowing nurses time to carry pit their research within their practice facilities (Majid et al., 2011).
The use of this form of based practice in nursing allows nurses to explore the full potential of their learned skills, it also requires them to stay updated with developments in the nursing field which is one of the recommendations of the IOM. The fulfillment of these recommendations all contribute to the provision of quality health care for all (Stevens, 2013). The use of this practice will continue to affect the nursing aspect of the medical field. Many nursing practitioners feel that there is a need to reduce their workload for them to implement the practice fully, as such the practice will have a positive impact in forcing institutions to lighten the nursing workloads. Evidence-based practice training will be a key step in improving the nurses' skills as well as improving their competencies and raising their confidence levels in the use of scientifically researched methods. Today EBP is being viewed by many nursing practitioners as a contemporary method; in the future, its prevalent use and the knowledge of its use among patient will make it the basic patient care method.
Nursing students need to learn all they can about the application of the based practice in the professional field. The employment of the practice is a core competence recommend by the IOM recommendation for the nursing and medical education curriculum (Ammouri AA, 2014). The practice fitness is one of the abilities that is assessed at each phase of learning whether doctoral, intermediate or basic; the evaluation measures the student’s confidence in the execution of EBP. In addition to being evaluated EBP is a practice that is here to stay, it was adopted into the practice of medicine and students have to learn its evolution and stay up-to-date with any changes in the guidelines for its use.
Since its inception, many advancements have been towards the application of the practice in the nursing field. It started as a need for having a clean environment in the nursing institution, but today It has advanced to more than just the collecting of patient information to its analysis and application of daily nursing activities. The education system of the nursing aspect of the medical field has laid emphasis on the need for training nurses who are not only skilled but who can make their deductions and apply research as it emerges. They should be able to deduce which methods have worked for their patients and which ones had despite their emphasis when they were at school. The practice has the tools to change not only the nursing practice, but also in the medical field, especially with the collaboration of all stakeholders in the health system.
