Admission Essay
Ever since I was a child, I have always felt and experienced the need to help and assist others. My aim is to become a Physical Therapist Assistant, and I am going to pursue the geriatric’s part of the field because I have always loved being around and working with the older generation. They have so much insight into life and most of them are passionate about telling their life stories. When I look at the older generation, I see a myriad of wisdom and experience in life that I myself have not experienced yet. Embracing the patients’ emotional and psychological aspects of care and allowing them to share their trials and tribulations, their true life stories can be a positive step in the healing process. I feel that I possess, at least, some of the core values and necessary skills to become a successful professional. Of them, compassion and caring, together with professional duty, should form a solid background in my chosen field, Geriatric Medicine.
therapists. Thus, caring for geriatric patients means considering their needs and always
respecting their values. With altering of their physiology, changes in body of the elderly are
taking place, and this is why they become, in many ways, vulnerable and in need of empathy
and concern more than before. Studies in the field show, a number of social factors also
add to the challenges of signing those patients for the right medical therapies. For instance, it
has to do with altered cognition, mobility, or other restrictions to appropriate health
insurance they may face. This means that a Physical Therapist also needs to understand and be
ready to deal with the difficult psychological and/or other economic influences on his patients’
lives.
Effective communication is always rewarding for medical staff and patients alike. Moreover, I am apt at designing such patient programs that are congruent with patient needs. As a mature and reliable professional, I can exercise self-determination in the older patients care and, perhaps, empower them, through my personality, to improve their level of function. My ultimate professional aim is to focus on achieving the greatest well-being and the highest potential for all of them. A high quality clinical care is at heart of my professional duty when attending to the personal needs and comforts of those demanding patients. As a Physical Therapist Assistant, I expect to receive extensive training in the field and learn all aspects about emotional and psychological care to be able to professionally treat patients with age problems. Besides, I also have a strong commitment to provide effective physical therapy services and demonstrate respect for others, since they are as unique and of value as every one of us. To care optimally means to demonstrate beneficence. To my mind, I possess a positive view to influence the health of society in a good manner.
I have always taken pride in my studies and work, and I certainly will become a good Physical Therapist Assistant. By all means, I am interested in involving in many professional activities as well. As a supporter of team work over individual work, I will actively participate in learning, teaching and mentoring others to realize their potential. Moreover, I am aware that the Physical Therapist Assistant profession calls for confidentiality of individuals in all professional contexts.
