The essay is going to explain why conquistador is a legacy of the primogeniture. Considering my family history, it will highlight how it affected our family set up. The essay will also discuss how the law of primogeniture effected where our family moved and lived. Finally, the paper will explain the lessons learnt from handling this task. (57 words)
Primogeniture refers to the situation where the first son in a family inherits all the titles and property following the death of his father. The law of primogeniture applies when the father dies and leaves no will. Therefore, unless their eldest brother died to enable them inherit from their father the young sons had no other option other than to struggle to acquire their own. We note the conquistador was because of the law of primogeniture. In the writing Primogeniture, it argues that,
“Most of the 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th century European men who came to the Americas were not first-born sons” This clearly explains that the younger sons in a family in Europe during that period had to leave their homelands and join other conquerors to find their own land. (132 words)
In our family history, following the paternal lineage the eldest son inherited the titles and property of the dead father. After the death of the eldest son, the other sons inherited the property equally. However, this has gradually diminished following the opposition of inheritance as dictated by primogeniture hence the embracement of partible inheritance. Although, primogeniture is customary in England it has no room in United States since the time of American Revolution. In fact, the Americans viewed it as foreign and unwanted practice. Our family recognizes the first-born males with higher importance compared to the younger sons. Considering the family’s discretion the name of the first son may have Roman numerals next to it. For instance, in our family’s case my grandfather wanted me named after him as Edward Mackey Myers IV but my mother refused to do so. Therefore, it is clear the first-born males shared names with their fathers and grandfathers and equally the women shared names with their mothers and grandmothers. (81 words)
Since my father was the first-born in my paternal grandfather’s family, he inherited his father’s title and property as the law of primogeniture dictates. Similarly, my grandfather being the first-born in my great grandfather’s family who was also the first-born in their family had the same applied in their respective cases. (51 words) This assignment has enabled me to conceptualize the law of primogeniture, its development over time and application in various areas especially in Europe and America. (25 words)
In conclusion, we observe the law of primogeniture was applicable when the father in a family died intestacy. In this case, the first-born son inherited the titles and property after his father’s death. Primogeniture made the younger sons in most families in England from 15th to 18th century to leave their homelands in order to acquire their own. Despite this law, being customary in England the families are gradually discarding it with wills taking over as in United States where it has no recognition at all. For instance, we observe in our family my mother refuses to name me as my grandfather wished because he did not want me to sound like the King of England. (116 words)
