The book, the life of Samuel Johnson, by James Boswell is a masterpiece both in its content and organization. Of great interest is the manner in which Boswell compares the writings of Joseph Addison and Samuel Johnson. It is apparent from Boswell’s description of these two writers that the methodology of audience involvement used by Addison and Johnson is contrastive. Boswell views Addison as a weak writer. In his opinion, Boswell argues that Addison’s writing style, is simplistic and appears to one directed to peers. Boswell believes that this style is not entirely efficient. This is because as much as a simplistic writing style is appealing to many readers; the audience does not take it with a lot of gravity. This is because a simplistic writing lacks a commanding tone, which captures the attentiveness of the reader.
On the contrary, Johnson is portrayed as a writer who has a lot of energy and vigor. Unlike Addison, Johnson adopts a more commanding tone. His writing seems to be difficult to grasp for an average reader. Through attention to detail is important to understand Johnson’s work. Boswell views this element about John’s readings as being strength. He believes that through a commanding tone within his book, Johnson is able to elevate himself about the level of a peer author. Many readers view him as a teacher from whom they can learn from. In this way, writings by Samuel Johnson are taken with a lot weight compared to those of Addison due to his assumption of a leadership role within his authorship space.
Therefore, it is clear from Boswell’s book that the writings of Joseph Addison and Samuel Johnson are distinct. Addison’s writing is simplistic and appears to be directed to peers. This portrays Addison as a weak writer who lacks the vigor and authorial leadership. On the contrary, Johnson takes advantage of his space as an author. His writings portray leadership and energy. This brings out Johnson as being a strong writer and leader. This attribute causes Boswell to view Johnson to see Johnson as being a stronger writer compared to Addison.
