Music is proof to me that we were meant to live life joyfully, regardless of the circumstances. Jazz, in particular, is a genre of music that was birthed out of the resilience of the human heart in being able to feel good despite what was happening in the outside world of bills, illnesses, heartbreaks and death. Herbie Hancock said that jazz represents the best characteristics of the human spirit, because it is a music that is centered on sharing with one another, listening to one another, respecting one another, and creating together in the moment. Furthermore, Louis Armstrong said that if someone has to ask what jazz is, they'll never know. These elements help me to imagine what it would be like to be in a world class jazz band as the trumpet player. The trumpet is such an emotive instrument that stands on its own in the world of jazz. Although the bass guitar and the saxophone all have their merits, I have always felt that the trumpet had something a little extra special about it. It's one of the most difficult instruments to learn, but I think it's a skill that is, like all things in life, worth the effort that it requires. There is something about its thunderous sound, which reminds me of old horns from the ancient times, that stirs up emotions that I do not feel when I listen to other music. When I hear a passionate trumpet player, I am always amazed by how much feeling can be conveyed through the nuances and subtleties of not only the sound but the expressions they make on their face. Their whole mind, body and soul go flow into the playing. If I were to create music for people to hear, this is how I would do it.
