Is there a nursing mission or philosophy in your organization? Is there a unit mission or goal on your unit? If so, are they consistent with those of a larger organization?
The philosophy of Herrmann will lean towards the visions and values of institution. The institution is guided with a philosophy which ensures that a better and healthy environment is created and a surrounding that will bring more success to the nurses. The hospital is in the frontline to ensure that it utilizes its resources for the benefit of the community at large. According to Anderson, & Mignor, 2008 “nurses are guided in taking interventions that covers about the clinical judgment, planning, decision making and administration of therapeutic measures that will help in coordination of patient care services” (p. 68).
In the organization, there exists a unit mission that is clearly stated. The nursing mission of Hermann hospital is to ensure that they work towards quality results by means of protecting, promoting and boosting better health and welfare of all clients under their care.
The unit mission of Hermann hospital is in line with those of a larger organization. This is because, every organization works towards the delivery of quality services. These organizations ensure that their outcomes will reflect on positive results on the health and well-being of the clients. Therefore, Hermann hospital shares these similarities with other larger health institutions and this is a reason why they are among the best in southern Texas.
The nurses of the institution are the major link with the rest of the stakeholders. The nurses must respect and put into practice ethics as outlined in the standards of nursing practice. Their abilities and skills must be applied to the natural setting so that the patients benefits from their consistency.
Describe how the nursing and/or department mission or goal exemplifies the organization. Support this with a rationale for your decision.
The nursing department works hard to ensure that it represents the goals and mission of the organization. According to Marquis & Huston, 2006 “the department duties and responsibilities are aligned according to the set goals and objective of the hospital” (p.34). There are also departmental goals of the department and the nurses work hard to perform their responsibilities to accomplish the set missions and visions. The nursing department ensures that they collaborate with all involved parties so that communication will be easier and useful. They pass their messages in a way that respects the will, privacy and the confidentiality of the clients.
On annual basis, the top management team reviews the achievements of the nursing department in accordance with the mission and goals. The nursing department of Hermann hospital ensures that they treat a high number of patients and their recovery comes faster. The department ensures that it reduces the rate of disability and injuries in the targeted population.
On technology, the department is working towards the installation of a wireless internet in the department. The nurses apply the latest advanced technologies and the evidence based medicine so that they can record positive outcomes on the health of individuals and shorten the length of hospital stay.
The mission defines what revolves in the organization and it measures the heights to be reached by the hospital. The nursing department will work towards establishing a strong foundation for the treatment and care of the patient’s hence building trust among the society members and other parties.
Compare the nursing mission, goals, and values with those of the organization.
The mission, goals and values of the organization and those of nursing are very similar in many dimensions. The mission talks about the provision of high quality services that ensures quick recovery and to the patients and an improvement in their health.
The nursing department also shares the goals since it aims at providing solutions to the health problems that exists in the society timely and accurately.
Nursing values are also similar because they ensure that the ethical standards and all regulations in the nursing standard of care are followed to the letter. Nursing also aims at supporting education and training to the nurses so that they can be of use in health institutions.
My individual roles are focused on the roles of a nurse and this will help the nursing department in many ways.
Nurses are devoted to offer high quality health care hence improving the health of the people. Nurses roles have limitations, besides ordered by the doctors they also look after the patients, give the patients food, and helping them out of their beds. However, recently they are now skilled professionals with distinct and separate professionals from the doctors. They are expected to know whether a dosage, a medication or an order is wrong and be able to communicate effectively with the doctors.
In communication which is an essential to all nursing roles, I will identify client problems and through writing or verbally they communicate with other members of the health team or health professionals, thus is an integral factor in nursing care. I will act as the clinical consultant and take part in researches; they offer expert care to individuals since they are specialists. I will participate in the health care educations offered by the health professionals. To provide postnatal and parental care since they are qualified midwives. Also provide delivering of babies from uncomplicated women. In their practitioner, since they are certified as appropriate specialist, according to Seago, 2001 “they offer educating the patients nursing assessment, counseling, and treating minor and self-limiting illness” (p.123).
I believe that nursing practice in Herrmann Healthcare exemplifies the mission, vision, goals and values because:
- Nurses ensures that they deliver the best care and treatment services to patients in an orderly and consistent manner
- The nursing practice accommodates for free training for all medical students who wishes to come for internships in the institutions
- Nursing practice works in accordance to the standards set in the law that governs all their activities therefore upholding moral values towards offering of services.
Ways in which nursing could improve in terms of operationalizing the mission of nursing or institution.
Nursing could improve in terms of operationalizing its mission in a number of ways. There is need for the nurses to understand better the health policy issues that revolves around the health sector. According to Huber, 2006 “nurses must establish the long term health policy issues, organize internal and external resources to work on the policies” (p.54) they should also improve understanding and recommend actions and build collaborations that will be useful to generate for funds to support activities undertaken for patient care and treatment.
The use of advance technology and application of computers to store information will help the organization to realize its mission and goals as outlined. These will improve the delivery of patient services in a way that many healthy stays will be minimized.
