1. Sports players are paid huge amounts of money to play games for our country. Meanwhile, there are many people living in abject poverty, even in the United States. This is not a situation which our country should be allowing and endorsing.
2. My proposed solution is that sports players’ earnings be capped at a reasonable amount, and that more money can instead be channelled into improving and introducing anti-poverty solutions. Areas such as Skid Row, in Los Angeles, are in desperate need of development, and the money being thrown at sports players’ wallets would be enough to make a huge impact on disadvantaged people.
3. This proposed solution is fair as it might balance out some of the inequality of wealth in the United States. Sports players will still be wealthy, and those living in poverty will still be on the lower end of the wealth scale, but the gap will be reduced to a certain degree. Skid Row, for example, is the poorest area of Los Angeles. Meanwhile, very close by, Beverly Hills is the richest. A gap in wealth as wide as this should not be possible in such close proximity.
4. A possible opposing argument would be that sports players are vital to our country as they represent us around the world and, in this way, contribute to the nation’s wealth and reputation. However, the people in America living in abject poverty are not receiving any benefits from living in the richest country in the world, or one with such a renowned positive global reputation. Therefore, something is going wrong.
