Thomas Nast
Thomas Nast was born in Germany in 1840, and he moved to the United States at the age of six. Initially he used to do illustrations to support his family that was going through acute financial crisis. Nast started his work as an illustrator when he was 15. At that time he was working as an illustrator for a magazine called Leslie’s Weekly New. His earning was $4 a week. In the year1862, during Civil War, he took a job of a war reporter in Harper’s Weekly Magazine.

For reporting the news he used to go on the battlefield and see how the soldiers are fighting and then draw pictures. His Christmas drawing, called Christmas Eve, 1862 is among his famous illustrations. Apart from the illustration of battlefield, he used to illustrate the stories of good v/s bad (moral stories). After the Civil War, Thomas diverted his attention towards illustrating cartoons of the corrupted politicians. He used to use the figure of the donkey for Democratic Party and elephant for Republican Party.
Edwin Austin Abbey

Edwin Abbey was a Victorian painter and illustrator. He was born on 1852. He was born in Philadelphia. He bagged success at the very younger age of his life. He completed his study in art from Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. His first illustration was Harper’s Weekly. At that time he was a teenager. He shifted to England and made England his permanent place of stay. He created pen and ink illustrations for many books and among them was the work of Shakespeare. In 1901 he received an opportunity to paint King Edward VII’s coronation at Westminster Abbey in 1902. Abbey is best recognized as an book and magazine illustrator, painter and a mural artist.
Abbey illustrated for American Publications and he also made variety of murals. He died in 1911, while he was painting the mural in Harrisburg.
Rose O’Neill
Rose O’Neill was born in Wilkes-Barre, in Pennsylvania in 1874. She started showing her flair and passion for writing, illustrating and poetry at the very young age of her life. She became renowned for her illustration at the very young age; i.e. in her early twenties. Rose O’Neill was a self trained artist. She lived in Missouri. Her career was a successful career as a magazine and book illustrator. She gained immense success at the very young age of her life.

She illustrated in some popular magazines such as Ladies Home Journal, Good Housekeeping etc. In her time, she was the best known as well as highly paid female illustrator in the United States. Along with illustration and art she has a passion for writing novels and poetry. Before the popularity of Micky Mouse, there was a very popular cartoon in the United States, called Kewpie. O’Neill was the illustrator of that cartoon.
Charles Dana Gibson

Charles Dana Gibson was born in Massachusetts. Before getting into the career of an artist Gibson completed his art education in New York Art Students League. His pen and ink illustration was published in Life Humor Magazine and then he continued to work there for thirty years. The major characteristics of hiss drawing are his loose, confident line work and the illustration on social commentary. His illustrations were famous in books as well as in decorative households. In his painting Gibson portrayed the sketch of balanced and self-assured American women. The typical representation of the woman thus was known as The Gibson Girl. It was popular from post Victorian Era to the time of World War I.
In course of time, the color printing and photograph emerged and his popularity and career started declining.
Arthur William Brown
The interesting fact about such a talented artist Arthur William Brown is that he was a dropout child and worked on a steamer. In his spare time, he used to sketch. He sold his sketching to a newspaper ("Arthur William Brown" 2016). Thus he earned money; he saved some of them and he enrolled his name in Art Student’s League College. He studied. His friend got a job for him in Saturday Evening Post ("Arthur William Brown" 2016), he went there and covered a circus. The Saturday Evening Post liked the article and Brown’s circus drawing. There was a bonding between the publisher and Brown which lasted for next forty years. Brown paid attention on story art for Collier’s College Humor. In WWI, he shared his posters ("Arthur William Brown" 2016).

Frederic Gruger

Fredric Gruger was born in Philadelphia in 1871. He studied drawing in Pennsylvania academy. Grugar’s style of sketches was pen-and-ink like Edwin Austin Abbey. He started his career as a newspaper artist. Grugar produced around 2700 illustrations for the Post. In early 1920s, he serialized stories for the Post, Cosmopolitan, and Harper’s Bazaar ("Society Of Illustrators:" 2016). His work was always applauded by the art editors and authors as well. He received appreciation by Fannie Hurst who said, “You have said in your drawings what I tried to say in 100,000 words. I am your debtor!” ("Society Of Illustrators:" 2016). Gruger would sketch a composition, and after that he would emply water color washes with lamp black so that it would indicate the board masses of grays and black ("Society Of Illustrators:" 2016).
JC Leyendecker

Leyendecker was an illustrator and entrepreneur. He was one of the prominent illustrator of 20th century. He was born in1874 in Montabaur, Germany. He created long- running characters such as Saturday Evening Post Babies as well as Arrow Collar man ("J C Leyendecker" 2016). For Saturday Evening Post, he created around 322 covers ("J C Leyendecker" 2016). His career was flourished in early 20th century, which is defined as the fashion era ("J C Leyendecker" 2016). He started becoming famous as a vogue illustrator. He along with his brother Frank produced oil paintings as the illustrations for various books and magazines. Both of them achieved joint success in their life for fifty years.
John Held Jr

John Held Jr. was born in 1889. He is not professionally or formally trained in art. He used to say that his father was his teacher and along with his father he would name other artist as his teachers such as sculptor M.Young ("Artist John Held, Jr. Created Cultural Icons, 1920S" 2016). He used to draw animals when he was just three years old. His childhood games used to be the making of clay toys ("Artist John Held, Jr. Created Cultural Icons, 1920S" 2016).
After joining West High school, John joined as a cartoonist in Salt Lake Tribune. His style was very humorous and satiric. The characters from his illustrations belonged to the real life situation. He had never gained commercial success but his work of art was applauded and appreciated by the critics.
Robert Fawcett

Robert Fawcett was born in 1903 in Cambridge where he attended Cambridge College of Art. Along with Cambridge College of Art, Fawcett also attended the other art schools such as Byam Shaw School of Art and Royal College of Art. He exhibited his illustrations of paintings and drawings at Art Galleries in London, Temple Gallery in Paris, Duna in Barcelona and even in New York. According to him, simplicity and immediacy of drawing make the drawing valuable. He moved to the United States to pursue his career in fine art. Initially he wanted to be the fine artist but situations made him to be the commercial artist (Fawcett 2014). He was very successful as a commercial artist. He wrote “On the Art of Drawing”. He could not go beyond limit in painting because he had a slight color blindness. But he was excellent designer (Fawcett 2014).
Haddon Sundblom

Hadddon Sunblom was a Finnish illustrator. He was born in 1899 in Michigan. He was especially popular for his advertising work. His Santa image became so popular that he was credited for creating the modern image of Santa. For marketing their product, Coca Cola hired Sunblom to produce the attractive image of Santa Clause. 35 years of his life, he had been painting the picture of Santa. These illustrations were also used by several magazines. In advertisements also the pictures became popular. Sublom painted the last picture in the year 1976. In the same year he died. He invented a jolly Santa, with white haired and round old man. Thus he imprinted the image of Santa into the minds of the people.
Norman Rockwell
Norman Rockwell was born on 1894 in New York City. He was the great worshiper of nature. He used to adore those who live their life according to the terms of nature ("NMAI: Norman Rockwell" 2016). His father was the source of inspiration for him in his journey as a painter. He had obtained the heredity of painting from his grandfather as well

Along with his father, Rockwell was highly impressed by the fashionable artists of his time such asWyeth, Leyendecker, Maxfield Parrish and Howard Pyles ("NMAI: Norman Rockwell" 2016). In his career as an illustrator, Rockwell studied the illustrations of especially Howard Pyles. He was also so much influenced by Leyendecker that after the completion of his study in New York City, he moved to New Rochelle because he wanted to be close with Leyendecker ("NMAI: Norman Rockwell" 2016).
He sold his first picture to The Sunday Evening Post when he was 22 years old. There was a bond between him and The Sunday Evening Post. During this bonding with Post, he illustrated 323 pictures to the Post.
Howard Chandler Christy

Howard Chandler Christy was born in 1973 in Morgan country, Ohio. When he was ten, he was hired for painting a sign of a butcher shop, which was his first paid job. At the age of 13, his sketches were Tolado Blade("Biography Of Howard Chandler Christy" 2016). He arrived to New York at the age of 16, but he had acute financial problems, due to this he could not complete his education and he return to his hometown in Ohio. There for three years, he worked hard, earned ample money, and again moved to New York
He started studying at the National Academy of Design ("Biography Of Howard Chandler Christy" 2016). He obtained commission to cover Spanish American War. He used to supply magazines with drawing and painting of the battlefield. His sketch “The Soldier’s Dream” gave him immense popularity. During World War I, he painted posters to encourage Americans to join the war. The characteristics of his painting were its seductive, charming and appealing presentation. Al Parker
Al Parker was born in 1906. He was known for creating an idealized reflection of the “Baby Boom” generation. The well known series of Al Parker is The Ladies’ Home Journal ("Al Parker Biography" 2016). In this he has shown that the mother and daughters have worn the same outfit and they are enjoying together. His work was popular among millions of people especially among women. He was flexible in his style and would change it to meet the requirements of the client.

He was reader-friendly artist and his pictures would give the readers immense pleasure. He was also called a trend setter. His models used to create new trend and fashion among the people. His ever-evolving style in painting had kept his special identity.
John Philip Falter
John Falter was born in 1910 in Plattsmouth Due to his father’s new business his family moved to Falls City, Nebraska when he was six years old. Falter had a flair for illustration and art since the very early age of his life. At the very young age of his life, he marketed his artistic skill by creating cartoon strips Down Thru The Ages for The Falls City Journal (Society 2016).

After high school, he took his artistic education at the Kansas City Art Institute and won the scholarship. He was not getting that much amount from his work so to survive himself; he started creating illustration for “Pulp” Magazine (Society 2016).
He portrayed Benjamin Franklin for January 16, 1943 issue of The Saturday Evening Post. His art used to be the simple depiction of the normal American life. During Second World War, he was put on the special assignment to design recruitment posters exclusively for women. His posters are famous for loose-lips-sink-ships theme (Society 2016).
David Levine
David Levine was born in Brooklyn in 1926 and studied painting. He studied at the Brooklyn Museum of Art School, Pratt Institute, the Taylor School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia and Eight Street School of New York ("David Levine Caricatures » Biography" 2016). His artwork has been included in several art museums, galleries and exhibition. Joseph Bowler
Joseph Bowler was born in 1928 in Forest Hills, New York. He had the liking of drawing, when he was three years old. His career as an artist started at the very early age of his life when he was 19 years old when he sold his art work to Cosmopolitan in 1947 ("Joe Bowler, Joseph Bowler" 2016). He worked as an apprentice at Charles E. Cooper Studios. His liking towards illustration developed in the same period.

Barron Storey was born in Dallas in the year 1940 and studied in Art Center School in Los Angeles as well as the School of Visual Art in New York. Bernie Wrightson
Bernie Wrightson was born on 27th October 1948 in Baltimore Maryland. He moved to Washington DC in 1968 ("Bernie Wrightson, Master Of Comic Book Macabre" 2016). He started his career as a professional cartoonist in 1967 with Baltimore Sun.. He can be best known as the artist of horror. But the office politics made his to quit the job very soon. In Washington, there was another House; a House of Secrets. They had started their mystery format. He sketched the Muck Monster in the House of Secret in July 1971 called Swamp Thing.

He has also illustrated for several publications. His works of art are there in the museums throughout the world. He has a career as an artist for thirty years. Stylish Caricatures have been the special characteristic of Al Hirschfeld’s painting. The illustrator has a long life of hundred years old. He was born in St. Louis. After studying art in Europe, he travelled to South Asia. He was influenced by the Japanese and Javanese art . James Jean

James Jean is a Taiwanese American illustrator. He has passed out from New York School of Visual Art. He is a comic book artist and commercial illustrator who completed a series of covers for the modern day fairy tales. He was born in Taiwan in 1979 and brought up in the United States. He is also into fine art with special focus on drawing and painting. In his interview he narrated his childhood experience; when he says, ‘Ever since I was a child, I’ve made drawings. I’ve always had an ability to transcribe a version of what I was seeing in my mind on paper. But in a literal sense, there is always a decay in the signal from the mind to the hand when drawing—I can never draw exactly what it is I see in my head. The resistance along the nerves and the imperfect transmission of information make for interesting and unexpected mutations of my imagination’
Charles Santore
Charles Santore was born in1935 in Philadelphia. His work as an illustrator is distinguished and miscellaneous. He has illustrated with top advertising agencies and TV magazines such as Redbook, Ladies Home Journal, and The Saturday Evening Post. Reader’s Digest and many more. The collection of his art work is also found in the museums. He started working as a Children’s book illustrator in 1986. He illustrated the books such as The Tale of Peter Rabbit and Other Cherished Stories, Aesop’s Fables, The Wizard of Oz, the Little Mermaid, Snow White etc. Santore has received several awards for his exquisite talents in art. His Aesop Fable illustration inspired national and internationals Merill Lynch TV commercials aired in 1993 Olympic Games In 2012 he was honored with retrospective at the Society of Illustrators in New York.
