The National Identification Card
The debate on mandatory national Identification Card has been going since long in United States of America. Today there is no true national identity card in America that can be issued nationwide. But US government is planning to issue biometric national identity cards to curb illegal immigration, for security of borders and to ease the method of deportation (Washington post, 2013).There are pros and cons of mandatory national identification card. The government wants to create national ID cards for combat terrorism and problems associated with immigration. There are advantages of having ID card by all US citizens. It will be easy to identify the citizens by law enforcement agencies and to mark certain person suspected with any illegal activity. Through Id card airline boarding will become efficient, and verification of passengers will be easy for officials. Issuance of national Identity card will decrease racial discrimination; end ethnic profiling and all citizens will be treated equally. The identification card will also make the process of purchase free of fraud as seller can demand the ID card. Use of Biometrics on ID card will restrict any fraudulent activity like fake ID cards. The mandatoryID card has faced a lot of opposition by public due to privacy issues. ID card will contain secret information about an individual so it can be used to track someone. The government will create a database containing personal information, and this can be an invasion of privacy. ID card will increase the power of police and will cause discrimination and harassment. Identity card can also be a mean of discriminate different races in America like Hispanics, Latinos and Asians. Minorities can be unnecessarily checked by police, banks and merchants. The ID card is not a sufficient mean of increasing security of US as the terrorists of September 11 attacks had driving licenses which also act as ID cards. Rather it can weaken civil liberty so, instead of creating new database the need is to standardize and manage the system already present (Wadhwa, 2013).
